  • Trip Report Disneyland Trip - January 18th-24th 2010 (PIC HEAVY)

For our family Christmas present, we went to Disneyland for a week in January - right int he middle of a massive storm. It was a very unique experience and we had a blast. I'll comment on most of the pictures, and all of them are linked back to their Flickr photo pages, where you can view them upto their full 8MP pictures. In the next few days when I'm a faster internet connection I'll upload my Universal Studios pictures from the trip - it just takes forever to upload to FLickr since these are crazy big images.

I apologize in advance for the number of pictures. I took over 3,600 pictures while I was there for the week, and that made me still come out with over 400 good quality pictures.

All pictures taken with a Canon Digital Rebel XT at ISO 400 with one of three lenses: 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, 75-300mm f/4-5.6, or 50mm f/1.8. Except where otherwise noted, all pictures were handheld, even the night ones.

To go straight to the Flickr photosets, click one of these: Disneyland January 2010 or Disneyland January 2010 - Fireworks

Driving down in the middle of a storm was scary:

Our Parents surprised us by staying at the Grand Californian Hotel - usually we stay at the Best Western across the street.

First thing we did was go to see Aladin, though at the time we didn't know it was going away.

    The waterfall at Grizzly Peak:

Why you don't use a flash at theme parks:

    The required letter shot:

Normally we go before Christmas, so going in January I was worried that I wouldn't be able to see It's a Small World decked out for Christmas. Luckily it was closing Tuesday, and we got there Monday.

This was walking across the park, and I held the camera against the railing you see on the left side of the picture to stabilize it for this 1/2 second exposure.

The flashing lightning turns out to make a great flash for long exposures.. this was one second handheld:

We managed to ride Autopia in between rainstorms, and had a good time.

The view from our room at the Grand Californian:

First time at the Toy Story Midway Mania and I totally killed my mom.

After that, we went on California Screamin' and being the photography nut I am, I brought my DSLR along for the ride, to get some cool pictures:

While I was on the ride, I put my camera up to my face just for the ride camera - the rest of the ride I wasn't looking through the viewfinder at all.

While on the ride I got a unique perspective on the World of Color platform:

While we were standing around outside we saw these giant green army men walk by, so we followed:

A Couple more pictures of World of Color:

    The Hollywood Tower Hotel:

    Some Pretty night pictures:

    Pictures of the Castle:

Attempting to drain the Rivers of America, while it was pouring down rain:

Apparently the boats don't really float.. but I knew that

While at Goofy's kitchen, Goofy was sleeping on the job!

This is one of my favorites from the trip, I just love the framing. Also, you probably rarely see this much blue sky at Disneyland.

Having fun while waiting for the parade:

The parade, which I thought was awful - I prefer the creative parades, and not ones that look like Disney couldn't find the costumes to bring out an old parade:

    The Disneyland Train:

    The new(ish) Monorail:

Saturday Night after the family had dinner, they were exhausted, so I went back to the park myself, solely to take pictures of Disneyland at night:

I also was there watching the Fireworks Saturday night. Main Street USA Was absolutely PACKED! I stood way back so that I could capture all the action since I was using my 50mm f/1.8 lens and I didn't want to be chopping off fireworks or castles:

Driving back.. there was TONS of snow on the mountains, but the roads were clear & dry

Ahh, I didn't realize that the picture of Walt & Mickey was named "Partners". That was only possible with my new (to this time at Disneyland) 50mm f/1.8 lens. I can't get a good enough exposure fast enough while hand-holding the camera with my 18-55mm kit lens.

I do minor editing in Lightroom - Mostly levels & exposure compensation & some white balance. I'm very picky with how my photos look. For example, the dark levels were dropped on the fireworks pictures to help darken the smoke.

If you want to see a before & after of any particular photo, let me know and I can cut one in half with pre and post work - similar to how my flash/no flash picture looks.

Thanks for the praise! These are all plenty big to use for desktop backgrounds if you click through to Flickr. They're my backgrounds right now.
