  • News Once again, the Wheelhouse of the Mark Twain is closed to Guests

performerinwaiting and I went to DL this morning to ride in the Mark Twain wheelhouse. The cast memeber informed us that last week and family was up there and one of their party (an unsupervised child is what we were led to believe) fell down the stairs, so they closed the wheelhouse to guests. BUT, they are now installing handrails and a gate so in about 3-4 weeks it will reopen to Park guests. If you've ever ridden up there it's a small enough area as it is, but with the railing and gate it is going to feel even smaller than before. One of the sacrifices to increase space was the small desk that was used to sign the guest book and hold the river pilots licences.

Thanks for the update, Tomrules55. I'm still hoping to make it up there someday.

Thanks for the update. I'm not surprised they're changing the stairs/railing. Last year when we went up there, it was a bit tricky coming down from the wheelhouse, with the small stairs, and no railing. I'm very glad they're going to improve it, as opposed to just closing it to guests!

Thanks for the update. We tried last time we were there and it was closed for similar reasons from what we were told.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

Re: Once again, the Wheelhouse of the Mark Twain is closed to Guests

This was closed for safety reasons in the past, as it's a big open hole over a 8+ foot drop, and children have fallen down the open hole and been taken away by paramedics.

But the Mark Twain Wheelhouse is also a Guest Compliment Machine and management didn't like the idea of not getting those compliments in to bolster their annual reviews, so the Wheelhouse was always reopened quickly after the DOSH inpsectors came out and found the steep ladder to be in good condition and outside of their bounds of regulation due to it's grandfathered status.

A second serious injury within a year means management got their hand slapped over this one and now they're going to install a fence and gate so the Guest Compliments can come rolling in again. :whistling

One day I'll build up enough courage to ask to get a ride up there. But it kinda doesn't feel right to ask for special treatment. Oh well...

I asked on Thursday and they told me the same thing - installing new handrails.

They said to check back again in 2 weeks when they expect it to be completed.

love your glass is half full attitude about this! you're right, I'm just saddened a bit when changes are made and it's at the expense guest experience as a whole. But, the new railing will keep it available to all, then....well...I guess I'm OK with it, but I wish guests would take more respondsibliity for their actions and treat this unique opportunity with more respect and not be part of the cause these kinds of accidents ( that I was led to believe was the problem) that now require allterations to the original concept.

Pfft. Nobody ever falls in Disneyland and this new railing is to degrading to the original theme and charm of Disneyland. Remove the ugly railing!

(If you haven't gotten the reference to the Frontierland Bridge by now, please note my intended sarcasm above)

That is a shame. I liked the style of that railing..made it seem more "authentic" to me. Ugh.
