  • [Chat] Space Mountain - Does The Queue "Break Show"?

    Howdy, all:

I've come to everybody on MiceChat to get their personal opinions on something about Space Mountain that has irked me for some time. While waiting in the indoor portion of the queue there are television monitors which contain a safety spiel, amongst other things. Within this safety spiel, the "space guy" flat out states something to the affect of, "Space Mountain is a high speed, turbulent roller coaster type ride..." Now, does this "break show"? It has always been my understanding that we, the Guests, are to be taken to "another world". Stating something is a "roller coaster type ride" to me brings the outside world in and blatantly reminds me, "Oh, I'm not actually going to go into outer space. I'm just going to ride a roller coaster type ride with nifty effects."

Am I wrong? Am I reading too much into this? Thanks!

I don't mind the indoor queue..
It's all about going into space and lift off.
I think the feeling is conveyed well (though I did like the previous spell prior 2005 better).
As far as having to state it (safety)
    People don't read signs.
These are the people that like to sue b/c their hand wasn't held the whole time.

I think the crime is the outdoor queue.

I think they have to say this sort of thing, for liability/safety reasons. The video, IMO, is themed well enough that it doesn't break show too much.

i remember a while back, there was a discussion that there was actually only one "ride" in the Disneyland park.. and it was Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, because it is referred to as a ride..

i wonder if this makes Space Mountain a "ride" as well since the safety spiel calls it that?

I mostly ignore the pre ride safety spiels now.

This is a safety requirement... no way around it. Matterhorn does it as do other rides. If not in video/audio the in in-queue signage. Legal requirements trump theme.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

Stating something is a "roller coaster" is a legal requirement?

I think it's in consideration for those who are not into rollercoasters
                and the other hand,
it's doesn't hold Disney liable if someone can't ride such an attraction for whatever reason there maybe.
Someone can't get off the ride and say:
wow, I didn't know that was a coaster, why didn't they warn me?
Now my back hurts or etc.

Indy warns ppl what type of ride it is too.

Re: Space Mountain - Does The Queue "Break Show"?

I can definitely understand the need for that sort of wording. Obviously, it'd be great to live in a world where every real-world detail like that could be absent from the onstage experience, but people do need to know what they're getting into. Telling guests that they're about to ride a rocket through space may be thematically correct, but it simply doesn't impart the information necessary to decide whether the attraction would be enjoyable and - more importantly - safe.

considering you can't see the ride at all until you board. for first time riders that may have health problems and dont know what Space Mountain is.. yes, i'd say it's a legal requirement.

No, you're right, although necessary, it does break show.

Dear lord, where is my helmet! I can't breathe out here in the void!

I think we really should go through months of rigorous training before being allowed to ride Space Mountain.

Ya.. that safety spiel is called CYA (Covering Your A**). I think it could be done better, more entertaing and stick to the theme a little better but it is what it is...

Hey!?... What not revamp SM to make it Marvel Mountain themed around the super heroes? Iron Man Mountain? The cars are made to look like a giant Iron Man and we all sit on his back (tongue in cheek.. waiting for violent replies)... LOL
