  • Trip Report The Adventures of the Gonzo Family and the Diminishing Bank Account

I've not done a trip report before, and have finally garnered enough courage to actually make one. This trip took place at the end of April/beginning of May and interpolated the Gumball Rally...Be gentle:

We had to get to the airport at about 4AM to catch our plane. We told my oldest son, Vash, we were going to a Paper Clip Convention in Anaheim, so, he had no idea what was in store. How a four year old can have this much energy at four in the morning is beyond me.

Atticus was in a good mood, too. Perhaps, they knew something special would happen...

I didn't get a shot of it, but, I set it up for the Disneyland Express to pick us up at John Wayne. That's when I would reveal where we were really going...This is how that conversation went:

    Bus drives up
Me: What does that bus have on the side of it?
    Vash: Disneyland
Me: So, where do you think we're really going?
Vash: To the Paper Clip Convention!
Me: But, don't you want to go to Disneyland?
Vash: NO! We're going to the Paper Clip Convention!
We then got on the bus, where I had to further explain my ruse...
Me: Vash, I was just joking about the Paper Clip Convention. We're Really going to Disneyland!
Vash stared at me for a moment. Processing. Processing.
    Vash: You mean today?
Me: Yes, we're going there right now!
Vash then gets excited and begins jumping up and down on the bus. There was no calming him down at that point.

It wasn't long before we arrived at the hotel, got checked in, and headed over to the park. We decided our yearly routine would be to hop on the Disneyland Railroad for a trip around the park, then to head on in. First, we captured this pic of the boys and are planning to get them here every year to see how much they grow.

Then we hit the rails, as it were. Erin, Vash and Atticus:

The boys and I...Atticus is not drugged, ha.

After a jaunt around the park, it was back to Main Street USA and a ride on the Omnibus (oh, by the way, I will probably get a bunch of the park's names wrong, please correct me)

Will you be posting photos from the paper clip convention? That sounds like a lot of fun.

Surprising kids with a trip is great. I remember one such trip where I was only told we were going to Anaheim, which meant nothing to me at the time. When we passed the Disneyland sign I was very excited, asking "Disneyland! Can we go to Disneyland?" as if that wasn't the point.

Re: The Adventures of the Gonzo Family and the Diminishing Bank Account

We forgot to take pics of the next section of our trip, mostly because we did the Castle walkthrough and Atticus was freaked out...Heck, some of that stuff freaked me out. Well, being the intelligent people that we are, we decided that Pirates of the Caribbean would calm him down....He dug the drops, but, the lightning and animatronics freaked him out. Ah, well, bad parenting aside, we continued on.

Vash was just tall enough for Splash Mountain, so, I decided to take him for his first trip, while Erin and Atticus went on Winnie the Pooh. Atticus actually enjoyed this one.

They, then, paid Pooh a visit while they waited for Vash and I.

Atticus loved the characters. Absolutely loved them...
Well, we soon realized that between the plane flight and this time, which was about 12 hours, we had only eaten some breakfast biscuits and Clif Bars, so, it was Dinner Time, but, the kids passed out.

So, Erin and I did what any good parent would do. We enjoyed dinner at Big Thunder BBQ while they slept. I don't know if it was the hunger pangs or what, but, it was delicious, and all you can eat was all that we wanted...mmmmmm...auugggg....barbecue....

        More on its way.

After dinner, Atticus woke up, but, Vash was still out. Atticus is a big animal lover, so we hit up the petting zoo.

Vash awoke from his deep slumber and was ready from some more rides. I was ready for some naps. Vash won this battle. We headed for Toon Town. Vash had just seen Who Framed Roger Rabbit? a few weeks earlier and was pretty excited to go on the ride....On the way in, the kids got a picture with Jabba the hutt.

She didn't even have her paint on...

Vash dug the ride. Atticus was not so happy.\

Re: The Adventures of the Gonzo Family and the Diminishing Bank Account

On the way to Mickey's house, we realized the kids hadn't had any exercise, so we made them workout a bit.

The trick is to put all the weight on your back and neck.

Then, we went to visit the big guy himself. Atticus was really excited and exclaimed, "Mow! Mow!" when Mickey appeared. It was pretty cool, and Vash was bragging about how Mickey gave him a kiss as we were leaving. I saved myself some time and gave Mickey my credit card.

It was now time to hit some Atticus Friendly attractions. But, first, Vash had to see if he was the chosen one.

After his attempt he said, "it's too hard to lift out, I guess only Arthur can do it." Maybe he was just worn out from the dumbbells...we hit the carousel

That was it for pics on the first day....We were pretty worn out, and luckily the kids passed out relatively early, and we went on my favorite ride. Mr. Bed's Wild Coma...

Re: The Adventures of the Gonzo Family and the Diminishing Bank Account

Alright, Day Two. This was the day of the Rally, so, I don't know, look for yourselves in the background or something....Or don't. Whatever.
Anyway, we got the park and hit some more fantasyland rides. Not many people know this, but, Mr. Toad and I are tight.

After we rode Casey Jr. and the Canal boats, Vash was ready for some excitement, so, Erin took him on Space Mountain for his first time. Atticus and I went on It's a Small World, then, as we waited for them, we went to the wishing well, and hung out there for awhile.

This was actually, my favorite part of the trip. It was nice and quiet and Atticus loved the fountains. We hung out there fro almost an hour.

Then, this lady came by. I guess she's some sort of celebrity, or something...Lady Gaga? Hannah Montana? Who knows, but, everyone was lining up to get a picture with her, so, being the follower I am, I joined in.

Well, we met back up with Erin and Vash, and were ready for some Lunch. We hopped on the Monorail and grabbed some grub (not grubs) at the RainForest Cafe.

Then it was Monorail time back to Disneyland. Vash would not look at the camera...he really wanted pictures of him looking out the window

um...I don't really have any witty remarks to make about the Monorail that's not a complete Simpson's ripoff...Oh, well...

                        More to come.

well, We went to DCA, but, I guess we didn't get any pics...I'm horrible with taking pictures, but, imagine the family in front of Paradise Pier and the golden gate bridge, and all that...Done? Okay, let's move on. We ended the day with a few more rides...

Someday this won't be a fun ride, but, the reality of Vash driving me around to get my meds. I'm going to be a crotchety old man...weeee

Erin and Vash went on the Astro Orbiter...and, just so you know, she's pointing to the camera for Vash to look, not flipping it off...Awkward...

Here's my obligatory attempt at an "artsy" picture...I failed miserably.

And it was back to the hotel for all of us, and we lived happily ever after...until we woke up and went back to the park the next two days...

                          more to come.
