  • News New film based on Haunted Mansion

So this is also something for the film forum, but it's based on a ride so I thiiiiink it's ok. Apparently Guillermo Del Toro (director of Pan's Labyrinth, The Hellboy series, and The Orphanage) is redoing the Haunted Mansion films from the perspective of the HatBox Ghost.

In a surprise appearance following Disney’s Tron: Legacy presentation at Comic-Con, director Guillermo del Toro announced he will be developing a new big screen adaptation of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion ride. Unlike the 2003 movie version of Haunted Mansion, which starred Eddie Murphy, del Toro said the live-action film will not be a comedy

Sounds fishy to me, especially with that character not in the ride anymore. Thoughts? Could this affect the future of the ride?

(I've never visited Disneyland Resort, Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Resort Paris, nor Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, so don't be fooled when I pretend to know what I'm talking about. [But I'm pretty good with the information, if I do say so myself. And you can hit me all you want with Walt Disney World.])

Hopefully it will be better than the Eddie Murphy movie.

Yes you did. And I'll say it here too:

Disney will do anything in order to justify updating their rides to some stupid movie based on it.

Very interesting...and if true I'm actually VERY excited. Del Toro has such a distinct style and I love it.

I am not sure how I feel about this. Apart from the first Pirates, movies based off of rides haven't been that great..... but I guess it could be great. The last Disney movie I saw that I truly enjoyed was The Princess and the Frog. I hope it is better than the original.

I pretty much love everything that man does. If he can get ahold of this, there's a good chance that it would turn out amazing. Plus a chance for them to get the HatBox Ghost back in the attractions. I'm excited.

I have to give him credit for basing on established characters in the ride! Something the Pirates films failed to do miserably.

Knowing that he's a great director and loves the attraction, I think he'll have a pretty good grasp on it. Can't wait!

I just hope there aren't too many tie-ins except the Hatbox Ghost.

I LOVED Pan's Labyrinth because it was so visually amazing and he seems to be a huge fan of the ride so hopefully he won't dissapoint us.

I think this is confirmation that Hatbox Ghost will return...

Guillermo del Toro Remaking Haunted Mansion for Disney - Movies News at IGN

The story will revolve around the character of the Hatbox Ghost, as seen in the attic portion of the ride. A new mythology centered on the mansion as the most haunted place in the world, will revolve around this pivotal character.
and you just know how Disney loves film tie-ins...

Re: new film based on Haunted Mansion???

I'll wait and see if this comes to fruition before I decide whether or not I like it. I can imagine del Toro's style being appropriate to the Haunted Mansion, and I certainly have no problem with the idea of doing a reboot, but I must admit that I could imagine the Hatbox Ghost character being problematic. Part of that character's strength - perhaps even the reason for his cult following - is the fact that he's so enigmatic. He never said anything and he was only there for a short time. Thrusting him to the forefront of a feature film in a (presumably) speaking role seems contradictory to that...but I could be 100% wrong, and it could be a perfect choice. Really just too soon to tell.

In any case, I hope the music is good! As both the first HM movie and Phantom Manor demonstrate, "Grim Grinning Ghosts" is a versatile theme that can be adapted in a lot of different orchestral settings. And although both Mark Mancina and John Debney did fine work with both, I'd love to hear this project handed off to another composer, one with an even better grasp of how to write a truly excellent orchestral film score. Perhaps it's a weird choice, but a Jerry Goldsmith HM score would interest me...if he were still in his corruptible mortal state, that is. I wonder how James Newton Howard would tackle the project...or Alan Silvestri...
