  • Underground Tunnels in Disneyland?!

I have heard on more than one occasion that there is an underground tunnel that goes from backstage behind the old Skyway ride building in Tommorowland to Coke Corner at the end of Main Street. Is there any truth to this urban legend? Are there any tunnels under Disneyland?
P.S. I know there is a huge tunnel system under the Magic Kingdom in Florida, I have a Disney castmember map of that.

I could me mistaken, but I could have sworn there was a larger underground network of tunnels. For instance, the queue for Rocket Rods went underground. Wasn't that section part of the "underground"?

I can't remember who told me. I think it was an ex-Imagineer buddy of mine whom I have lost contact with.

There are not a substantial amount of accessible ones that I am aware of. I know there are some maintenance areas but nothing like Florida. Course what do I know, I just work there (seems like CMs always know the least LOL). I believe that Disneyworld is the park with the tunnels - I think I took a tour of them as a child if I remember correctly.

ok here's the story on the tunnels:

there are three underground passages in Disneyland that I am aware of. One of them is the basement under pirates. This "tunnel" which is more of a square hallway, is where the bayou CMs fold napkins and the famed West Side Diner (formerly "The Pit") CM cafe is located. For the uninnitiated, it is directly below the restrooms by the New Orleans train station (ever wonder where those swinging "saloon" style doors lead to... now you know ).

The second tunnel starts behind Ariel's Grotto (AKA The Triton Gardens) and goes all the way behind Redd Rocket's. This is also the tunnel that the players at the Club Buzz stage take to get to the platform. The Carousel Theater motors and maintinance can also be found down there in the gloom (it's quite scary if you spend too much time snooping around, mostly because there are ghost stories about this tunnel that have to do with a certain legendary accident on America Sings some time ago...). Agan though, this tunnel is not round, it's square (but it curves). I havent been down there in some time because the Astro Blaster contractors have been using it for their project.

Finally, the third "tunnel" is more of an oil pipeline that's located out back near the Magic Music days complex/old animatronic graveyard. It's merely a large rounded pipe that a semi truck could back down to deliver goods to the park.

Well, I hope this clears things up and that you enjoy the info!

There are tunnels underneath the rivers of america because the cm's need to get there for fantasmic and they need a way to get off the island in case of emergency. Also where do you think the giant dragon comes from?

I don't think so. I have seen the performers getting over there from the Country Bear restaurant on the old motorized rafts that they take guests to the island on. Regarding the dragon, I am pretty sure that he is actually in the Old Mill building, that is, I think he is always there, folded up in that building. Somebody help me out here.

Also, can you see the track for the Carousel theater, I understand that it looks very much like a train track. <Finally, the third "tunnel" is more of an oil pipeline that's located out back near the Magic Music days complex/old animatronic graveyard. There are actually 2 tunnel systems in DL (if u can call them that). One runs from TLT to Carousel Theater (Innoventions) and was designed to move food items and characters to TLT without going onstage. The only other tunnel runs throughout the NOS area connecting the NOMK (New Orleans Main kitchen) with the Club, Blue Bayou, the Disney Gallery, and the rest of the area. There is also a Cast Cafe here as well. Oh! And there is one more tunnel that runs from the Harbor House (Harbor point) Cast Building where main costuming is to the old Admin building, but that's really more of a basement...

There ARE tunnels under Dland but none of them connect like you are saying. There used to be one from the back of circle vision to behind Innoventions. It actually still exhists. It is mainly used to transport food to Club Buzz. There are several others but... they are not the types of tunnels you think they are. Most are about 5-10ft long and very uninteresting. There are underground complexs in NOS sort of... The kitchen for the Blue Bayou is sunk as well as the River Belle Terrace and there is a cast eatery down there. But gain no tunnels linking Tomorrowland to Main Street and Main Street to NOS and so forth.

Just think about it... if there were those tunnels you would never see cast members crossing the hub to get to and from the west of the park.

                              Yours seems the most logical.

Now that you talked about the tunnel behind Ariels grotto.... My friend and I were walking by there during a parade I think, and two lady CM's taunted us saying that there is a button to open it. So me and my friend searched for a while till we found it. Then we realized that it needed a key... those tricky tricky CM's!

the dragon in F! is not hidden in the house on the island...whenever you get a chance...go on the island, on the main stage...there is a pit that opens up...probabl 20x20 feet...and the dragon is like a hydralic machine that pops out...if you ever watch Fantasmic from the side...you could see the dragon lowering down into the pit after the scene...it's quite interesting...

Sorry ... there are "underground" tunnels in FL ... but not Disneyland in Anaheim. There are a few offices that are underground ... but not tunnels!

Quite right- having worked crowd control for Fantasmic for an entire summer and working the premier of Pirates these tunnels are not really tunnels. There is a basement area below Pirates, with a random enterance directly across from Pieces of Eight.

There are underground passages, througout Tommorrowland as the other posts describe. None that connect any of the lands. The largest underground quote on quote tunnel system at DL is not even under the park, its behind Space Mtn in the large buildings that contain all the human resources, security, fire, costumes, etc.

There is an amazing museum down there for cast members that looks like it was started slightly after the park opened and ran all the way until Star Tours when they ran out of space. I have spent many an hour scratching around these area.

Lastly I do not believe there is any tunnel connecting Rivers of America to Tom Sawyer's Island and here is why. In the late 1960's at a grad nite, students from all boys catholic high school, managed to creep onto the island over an hour long period avoiding suspicion. Afterwards they rounded up the guests and escorted them back to the rafts where they took control of the oars and pushed the rafts away. The island was held succesffully (by legend) for several hours, because the only way to get to the island were the rafts or the canoes. The students eventually gave themselves up and for the the better part of 30 years that high school was not allowed to return to the park and Tom Sawyer's Island has hence forth been closed on grad nites...just some fun trivia from my alum mater---thats the reason I became a Disney fan!

I hardly think they would be considered tunnels.. more like serice floors that you see in hotels. Ever seen that show "lasvegas" looks like that but more old looking and concrete walls. Disneyland has basement floors. Its like how downtown disney has a large basement where they recieve all their supplies. Its amazing how big that is.
