  • People Mover 1967-1975 Question

OK, so this is something I have been wondering about for a long time. Before Space Mountain and the Starcade were built, what route did the people mover take to get from the Adventure thru Inner Space building over to America Sings? Anybody remember?

It was mostly the same route, just some minor corrections to get it into the building.

It would go out and across to Mission to Mars/Flight to the Moon then when they added Space Mtn. They adjusted the track. Think of the lay out of the queue area of Space on the upper level, it would follow the front of that. I have never seen pics just going off of stories.

        Re: People Mover 1967-1975 Question

There was an old special called "Disneyland: From Pirates of the Carribean to the World of Tomorrow" which features a lot of People Mover shots. You can kind of see the track in one shot. There was an opening the cars came out of and it leads behind (or over) the front of a stage area that was there before Space Mountain. It would go across to the Mission to Mars building to the track you still see there today. I think the Space Mountain alignment is a little further back and little higher up than the old track. They did have to close the track so they could install the track leading to Space Mountain and demolish the old track.

I wasn't born until 1981, but that's what I can see from video evidence.

They also re-aligned the track going through America Sings to create the super speed tunnels/Tron room.

Didn't they have to realign the track for Rocket Rods and Innoventions?

They didn't realign them too much. The fact that the rocket rods had to speed up and slow down all the time is what eventually led to their downfall.

Yes, they did realign the track in Innoventions to accomodate the Rocket Rods. Actually, that alignment brought the track position closer to the original PM alignment around the edge of the building's upstairs instead of more to the left.

I've noticed in old videos that the track was originally narrower than it is now. I mean that the walkway with the railing that you see on the track now was not there before. I wasn't born until '81, so I've never seen the track without it. It's only wide enough to provide a walkway for maintenance and evacuation. Does anyone know when it was added to the track?

Lets put it this way .....

Picture where the Star Trader ends .. and Starcade's building begins. It's right there is where an opening took the Peoplemover against a curved wall .. right across what is now the entrance into HISTA .. straight across Redd Rocket's Pizza Port.
