  • [Chat] Help me prove my husband wrong!

My husband hates Disneyland. And he LOVES trying to convince me that Disneyland is going to close very soon. Usually his arguement is all about peak oil. Oil prices go up and the price to run Disneyland is so insane that no one ever goes anymore. So then the "pirates" come to Ca and take over the park and make it their evil lair. I usually answer this with a full chorus of "A Pirates Life for Me" and say, "Honey you haven't been in a while....the Pirates took over a long time ago." HAHAHHA

Today his arguement is the giant earthquake that will come and topple the castle and (as his calls it) the big mountain. I told him that Disney aint foolin' around here-- this isn't some dinky park--it's freakin' DISNEYLAND. They have a plan. It's all been retro-fitted. Billions of dollars are on the line... they have a plan.

Then he asked me to explain further. Ummmmm..... I don't know. But I bet I can find someone who does.

    Okay gang. Sic 'em!
To All Who Come to this Happy Place.... Welcome! Disneyland is Your Land!

Disneyland is one of the most attended destinations in the world, it's not going to close. End of story.

Tell your husband that the Disney Corporation never says "no" to ginormous profits, happy stockholders and obscene bonuses.

            He'll understand.

(And don't worry about Acts o' God -- after an 8.0, the DLR will be one of the first things back up & running in Southern California.)

Re: Help me prove my husband wrong!

Ask him how many days Disneyland has ever been closed during it's 56 years of operation, despite economic troubles, oil shortages, earthquakes, fires, wars, etc.

With the amount of money invested and earned in/by Disneyland, it isn't going to close for anything less than California undergoing a sudden gratuitous existence failure.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

                          Ha!

I have no idea about the earthquake-readiness of the older attractions at Disneyland. California has had earthquake building codes for a long time, though, so I imagine reinforcement has been part of major renovations like Tomorrowland in the 1990s and 2005. If there were significant damage done to the park, Disney certainly has the capital to rebuild, and likely would rebuild it into something even better.

The economy has been bad for several years, but Disney has successfully managed that challenge with local APs and other seasonal promotions to keep attendance up year-round. As gas prices continue to rise travel may decrease, but Disneyland seems to draw a huge number of guests for whom the driving distance is short enough for gas prices to be an insignificant obstacle to attendance.

Looks like you need to throw some hard attendance numbers at him to show people do go to Disneyland... a LOT of people.

If oil prices did go up dramatically, the tourist market in Anaheim could dry up, but more and more locals would look for things to do in their own backyard. For that reason, and everything already mentioned, I don't think Disneyland will be shutting their doors anytime soon.

I think high oil prices would shut down Walt Disney World before they shut down Disneyland.
