  • Video The Frontier Freight Train in HD 1950s

We did the Retlaw 1 passenger train (the Main Street Train) last week. We just posted up a bunch of old video of the Frontier freight and cattle train. New footage and photos from 1955 never before published.

Come get your vintage Disney on.

That is awesome. Thanks for sharing the video! What happened to the Frontier Train cattle cars and gondolas? The caboose looks to be the same one still around on the tracks now.

That's kinda erie with the ventilated cattle cars with tons of people in them. I'm kinda happy that train is no longer in service.

Thanks for sharing this! In all honesty, I too was unaware of the Frontier Train. How fascinating. It seems as if there's always so much more to learn about Disneyland, which is quite awesome.

Re: The Frontier Freight Train in HD 1950s

In 1955, the yellow passenger cars were known as “Retlaw1.” The brown freight cars were known as
                      “Retlaw 2” (natch).

Back then there were three cattle cars, based on the ones from Walt’s Carolwood Pacific, numbered 301 – 303, two gondolas numbered 401 and 402, and a caboose numbered 501.

In 1956 the cars were modified with the addition of two tiered benches running lengthwise though the cars, awenings, and by removing the top three cattle car slats on the Park side to allow for better viewing. The cattle cars retained their sliding doors. By 1958 the doors were removed and the remaining five slats gave way to red-and-white striped canvas. Two additional gondolas were added to the train and when the Fred Gurley arrived with her own train set, the freight cars were numbered in their current configuration, 201 – 208.

Back in 1955, there were no steps on the cattle cars; guests were loaded into the cars on cattle ramps (Walt wanted to give his guests the feeling of traveling as livestock; his guests were less than enthused).

Here are some early drawings of some of the cars:

At least he was thinking of ADA requirements back then! LOL
You can still ride the caboose sometimes. Sadly you can only ride in the front section and not the upper and back section. I miss riding in the top.

Steve, are any of the cars there now the original cattle cars that were modified?

All the cars in the "Holiday Red" train (the ones with red striped awenings, trailed by the caboose) are original (well, except the two gondolas added just a couple years later--since the makeup of the train was changed, I'm not sure which gondolas are the newer ones).
