  • [Fun] Flying Saucers Video / Family Picture

My grandfather has recently been putting old film reels onto DVD for the family and I came across a short clip to share. It is footage of my mother (about age 7) on the Flying Saucers with her big brother. It's only about a minute long, but it was so cool to see! Judging by her age, I'd say this was taken circa 1963.

And here was an old photo of her family at Disneyland for a company picnic sometime around 1958. She's the little one near the top.

That is great! It's so funny to see people so much more dressed up to go to Disneyland, especially to see them bobbing around on the flying saucers.

Very nice video. Thanks for sharing. Did this work the same way Maters Tires will work with air blowing up from underneath , or did these saucers have powered fans blowing down? Why did they remove this ride?

I wasn't able to see the video, but if there is a 6-year old girl sitting in the same position for the whole ride, leaning and trying to get the thing moving....it might be me! LOL

Always love video of this attraction. Such a unique take on bumper cars. Amazed they got it to work at all. It's fairly complex. Glad it's getting brought back.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

Another cool thing is that the picture you posted was taken outside the infamous Mickey Mouse Club Circus. Walt wanted to put a circus in the park, but after seeing how shady all the performers and managers were, he evicted them from the park.

Just an interesting piece of history.

Cool video. Such an interesting ride concept for that time period. Too bad it was a maintenance nightmare.

Also, I forgot how terrible the characters looked back then.. almost creepy.

Ahh, yes, the white t-shirt, blue jeans with rolled cuff and tennis shoes. Great fashion. Where has the time gone?
I am old. But still love Disneyland.
