  • [Question] Have the new sleds been installed on the Matterhorn yet?

If not, then what are the rumors as to when this might occur?

Very few have had the privilege of operating Space Mountain. Fewer still have pushed the A-lift stop. I am one of those few.

The new bobsleds have yet to be installed, though they have been tested numerous times. They will be installed supposedly during the next refurbishment.

The Matterhorn is going down in January 2012 for a 6 month refurbishment. When it reopens, and if Tony Baxter gets his way, there will be new effects throughout the mountain, some new AA Abominable Snowman figures, and the new bobsleds.

I will miss the Matterhorn as well, but like many great attractions, a long refurb is a great thing, and will pay off in the end. I would be greatful if they finally gave Indy a refurb this long! That ride has seen better days, and lets be grateful that the Matterhorn not only is being fixed up, but will also be getting improvements!
All right, listen! I didn't want to have to do this, but you leave me no choice. Here comes the smolder.

I hear ya but here are the two things that get me........

1 - Six months. Long time. Half a year (I googled that). That's a heck of a long time for such a beloved attraction.
2 - Knowing what's coming.....replacing the bobsleds with side-by-side seating. That bums me out. I've known the Matterhorn all my life with the original seating, and I've come to rather appreciate it especially since it serves "disney dates" kinda nicely. Kinda sad to know that for the forseeable future that 'the matterhorn cuddle' will be long gone. All through high school, my 20's, 30's, and 40s.....always nice to hold your date close through the ride.

Actually, the Matterhorn isn't receiving side by side seating with the new bobsleds. The lap sitting will be gone (thank goodness), but you will still sit single file in a row, with three in each car.

We call this "The Ultimate Date Ride" (every since they did away with the Peoplemaker) but can get a little awkward when you're with a group of friends. Still, I mourn the passing of the bobsled cars. Does anyone know if they're smoothing out the track a bit? I know they did a little in the last refurb but 6 months seems like a long time to just put in new cars and AA snowmen.

This is probably sacrilegious, but I'm glad they are changing the bobsleds. Unless you're with a date the bobsled configuration really IS awkward. Whenever I go to DLR with friends we always end up asking for separate cars, and I have noticed that many others do the same.

^^I agree now, however, my favorite Disneyland memory I have is riding the Matterhorn with my dad and his belly giggling when we went through turns. It is sad that I will not share this with my children. The Matterhorn was my first roller coaster and it is still my favorite because I went on it with my dad. I'm happy that my niece is going with us in two weeks and will get to experience the ride with my dad before the cars are gone. As fun as it was with my dad it is super awkward and uncomfortable to go on now that I'm 6'3. I always go single. I made the unfortunate decision to got with my friend one day and ended up riding the entire time with her head hitting my nose and it wasn't very pleasant for the rest of my body either.

I've rode separate w/ dates before cause it's not all that comfortable to be honest. I never feel all intimate, i just feel like I'm at risk of being headbutt in the face.

Wait...is the Matterhorn really going down for six months? This is awesome! It really needs that love. I hope (and expect) it'll be something along the lines of the WDW Space Mountain refurb, where they just made a major upgrade to the control systems, replaced some track, and prettied it up a bit.

A movie based on the Matterhorn is in the works so I wouldn't be surprised if they put some money into it.
