  • Trip Report Stuck on Monorail again

I was on the Monorail coming into the Tomorrowland Station today and it came to an abrupt stop over the walkway. We sat there in the heat for about 20 min. People were getting hot and annoyed and my friend actually feel asleep. When we finally got off the monorail and everyone got Fastpasses. This happened last time I was a Disneyland. What is wrong with the Monorail? I thought they are new.

    Re: Stuck on Monorail again

There are many things that can contribute to the stopping of the monorail. It could haveb een a duck on the track and this has happened and when it does all they can do is sit there til the duck decides to move. Also if the other monorail is at the station and waiting to get people off and new people on could have held you all up as well.

So at least you got a RE/AD for the trouble. =)

I dunno, I dont think I would like to be stuck on the monorail especially when it is packed and things. Now give me a attraction to get escorted out of with the worklights on and Ill take that anyday

We rode in the front on Wednesday night and I was able to question one of the monorail pilots. She told me that sometimes they have to e-stop because they went to slow up a hill and the monorail started to roll backwards. the monorail automatically e-stops if ANYTHING is wrong

Ahhhhh Automatic E-stops nice. Unlike attractions where we have to hit the E-Stop if a safety violation is observed.

Some of the ones you wouldn't think of have been upgraded to Automatic E-stops, like Peter Pan - It was the day it came back from a big Rehab, and they didn't test-lap it enough to catch it.

If there's a bad power pickup shoe to one ship (or they get paint/dirt in the power tracks) the motor will stall and the ship slows and coasts till it gets to a good spot again, but it starts to slips back in the timing too far and creates a safety zone violation, and the world stops. Or it doesn't get to a good spot and stalls on the track, and triggers an E-stop.

SpaceJockey: Did they get it going again and get into the station under their own power, or did they have to bring out one of the Monorail Tractors and tow the train in?

There are times when either the track power rectifiers trip out and they have to send someone out to manually reset it, or the train systems spazz out and it has to be shut down and rebooted. Yup, good ole "BSOD" strikes again.

Its like some e stops can not be used, well I mean managment doesnt want you to use it lol Like Grizzly when I worked it before if you hit the e stop on there, UH OH there goes all the water being let out over to Pacific Wharf and then you are down for a good hour to 2 hours. =/ NO BUENO

As I understand it (and looking over the control panels on several of the rides...) there are several levels of E-Stop on some rides. And every single one of them is different, so don't yell at me if I don't have all the fine points perfect.

There are the "first-level" Ride Stops that keep all the computers and controllers running but call an early and orderly halt to all vehicles and reset the ride to the Loading position, like on Dumbo or Astro-Orbitor. Then you can remove the guests with the problems and restart the ride easily and quickly when it's all better.

Then there are the more critical E-Stops like a "Cascade" on Space Mountain or Big Thunder. They can't automatically restart after you trip those because you have to evacuate the ride vehicles, and then go through a reset and restart process to get all the vehicles back to the station and restart them in cycle. Those aren't as bad because the regular Ride Operators can do it themselves.

The worst case ones do a Shunt Trip to the Main Breakers to cut off all electrical power to the ride mechanisms, and the air brakes actuate in a fail-safe mode on loss of power to stop all the coaster cars at the next brake zone.

That's in case there is a person on the track or otherwise in immediate peril and you have to kill all motion NOW. Or there's an electrical fire or other major failure in the equipment room(s) or a runaway motor with a stuck or shorted motor controller - it didn't respond properly when you hit the regular Stop button, and you really need to "beat it with a club repeatedly until you make absolutely sure it stops twitching."

And the one on Grizzly that also drains the flume into the Pacific Wharf reservoir falls under the worst case stop, but you have to have the auto-drain rigged in case someone fell into the flume at Load. That's the one you don't want to hit accidentally, because questions will be asked.

The major stops take the Ride Mechanics and Electricians to come reset all the circuit breakers, test and inspect all the systems, and bring the ride back up from a cold start. Oh, and pump the water back into GRR. And that will take an hour or more.

                        Re: Stuck on Monorail again

Bruce, they got going again without the tow. There was no other train at the station. As soon as well we made the bend around the Matterhorn we came to a hard stop and it sounded like the brakes were making a clanking noise. The pilot asured us several times that they were working on the Monorail situation but, he never said what happened.

                          Re: Stuck on Monorail again

Having to stop in the middle of a Monorail ride isn't like stopping on any other ride. If it's sunny out the heat inside can build quickly (no A/C if your not moving) making it unbearable fast. We got stuck on the Monorail in WDW once. The heat was incredible - someone started talking about forcing the doors open for air. I thought about calling 911 and would have if anybody would have become ill. Now, I won't ride if it's hot.

If you are a Ride Op in any capacity, Never EVER be afraid to hit the Big Red Button that stops the ride - or the Even Bigger Red Button that kills the power, drains the bathtub, and gathers lots of Suits. As long as you heard or saw a bad safety situation that was a real or a developing safety concern that would call for it - Like someone in the process of falling into the flume and being grabbed by other people on the dock... Your main job is the safety of the other CMs and the Guests.

The BP Gulf oil blowout from a year ago was caused by a Drilling Rig Operator who was afraid to hit the Big Red Button because he had been told flat-out that he'd get fired if he hit it without being 100% correct - which is both impossible and morally wrong. Everyone knows Hindsight is always 20/20 and Managers love to be Saturday Morning QB's...

So he hemmed and hawed for a while, and the Manager on duty with him wasn't sure, and they couldn't reach anyone in the Main Office on shore... Before finally deciding to "get fired" and hit the BRB on his own initiative - and as a result the automatic blowout preventer seal-off failed. Electric power had already been lost on the rig as fires were breaking out, and the stored hydraulic pressure in the safety system wasn't enough to choke off the blowing well. And you all know what happened next.

I was wondering why the Monorail was down yesterday. Now I know.
