  • [Question] NEW 3 SEATER BOBSLEDS? Any thoughts?

So it seems (if I have it right) the new Matterhorn Bobsleds will seat THREE. Any thoughts / info on this?

I'm bummed because younger kids feel safer sitting WITH their parents (at least mine did!!) rather than in their own seat. Matterhorn and Splash Mountain are 2 rides that my kids felt were scary when they were younger but OK WITH Mum or Dad. They find it much scarier and in the case of SPLASH will not ride if having a seat to themselves.

My eldest is 14 and still hates even the thought of SPLASH, but used to go on it when the seat was shared. Everyone is different of course but any thoughts out there?

    Mousing Around,

Actually, there are two issues that are really going to change as a result of these new seats.

    1. Parents will not want their kids riding alone because the ride is so rough. Also, (like you mentioned above) some kids will not want to ride without their parents because they are generally scared.

    2. And this is more important than #1.... Couples riding together. Let's face it, guys... who hasn't taken a date to Disneyland and casually suggested a ride on the Matterhorn, huh? What an opportunity to get close and personal with the one you love, or want to love, or the person you paid park admission for and owes you something.... and you probably paid for dinner too!

I found a bra once up on the side of the track after closing. I'm sure there is a story there, but we'll never know the details!

      THANKS for the post Redd!

.....AND I'm sure the reason (though I haven't actually read this anywhere) was for safety but then again, has it been operating ALL THESE YEARS as UNSAFE? Doesn't the rider capacity now go down by a total of 2 per dispatch also?? Is this really necessary?

      ---------- Post added 01-27-2012 at 01:51 AM ----------

oops sorry re-posted too fast. I guess the capacity goes down POSSIBLY by two per dispatch, but it might also be argued that just as often it goes UP by 2 per dispatch.

UGH! The more I think about it, it now GUARANTEES 6 riders as opposed 4 - 8. Taking kids not riding it it might mean less riders, but I guess Disney dollars and capacity is a hazy area for me: Once they are in the park having folks NOT ride means they are spending. (Or leaving cuz it's too busy!!)

Re: NEW 3 SEATER BOBSLEDS? Any thoughts?

The question of capacity with the new sleds is really a good one.

On the old sleds, singles that wanted to ride separately, were allowed to do so. Also, some larger guests simply had to have their own seats. What was the average number of passengers dispatched per two-sled train? Don't know for sure, but it was probably greater than four and less than the maximum of eight. My guess was around 6.

On the new sleds, there will still be issues with seating. Some people don't (and will never) understand that there are TWO sleds tied together and that they travel together through the ride. Groups of two will want to ride in the same sled, not seats 3 and 4. Groups of three will all want to ride in the same sled. This preference, logical or not, will reduce capacity a little.

Tell a group of three to line up on Numbers 1, 2 and 3, they will very often ignore you and all line up on Number One. All you can do is wait for them to figure it out and get in before lining up the next group. If you try to spread them out on the numbers, they will argue and say they all want to ride together. Eventually, they all get in, usually by climbing over the seats.

By the way, all attraction hosts and hostesses desparately try to avoid doing or saying anthing that might make a guest angry and file a complaint. I used to have the perfect solution when loading bobsleds with larger guests. If a large couple that I knew could not fit into a single seat wanted to ride together, I simply left the seat behind them empty. After they tried to fit in one seat and failed, one of them would step out and climb in the back seat.... all without me having to say a word. Worked every time.

(Mojave, I was rambling on from the perspective of a teenager, myself along time ago.)

Re: NEW 3 SEATER BOBSLEDS? Any thoughts?

Originally I was upset about the new bobsleds when they were merely a rumor circulating around the boards. Sure it's a nice idea to cozy up next to a friend, lover, or a family member, but that nice idea is quickly smashed when your hair is flying in the other person's face, your hips are crushing theirs, your legs are hitting against each others, and like my mom and I did, smack our heads together at the dead man's drop. Even sitting in the bobsled by myself, I have to really brace myself so as to lessen the blows that my legs take to the sides of the vehicle and avoid hitting my arms and elbows. There was just too much room in the car, even when lap sitting.

So with that said, yes, I am looking forward to the new bobsleds. Plus they'll load faster, so I'm on board!

The only thing I'm concerned about is when I have a party of 4 that has to be separated by the joint that connects the two cars. No better way to estrange a friend than do put them in a different car...

I have such mixed feelings. I will miss the old bobsleds for memories, rough rides, and uncomfortable moments with your seat mate. But I am looking forward to faster loading, only bruising myself instead of someone else while thrashing about, and avoiding the awkward close quarters.

                Viva la new sleds!

Capacity will certainly increase on the ride. No more having the option of having a full train to ones self which was popular.

I am ELATED about the new bobsleds!

I wouldn't think that the old sleds were unsafe, but I would guess that they were pretty inefficient, overall. Whenever I was at the Matterhorn I usually observed a majority of sleds going out as singles. I know that whenever I was at the ride with friends, we always asked for our own seats, and others apparently did, too.

If the sleds were consistently going out with loads under expected capacity, changing them made a lot of sense. I do get what the parents in this thread are saying...if you were on the Matterhorn with an apprehensive child, it probably made a huge difference to be able to sit right with them. Perhaps now instead, the Matterhorn can be like a badge of honor for kids, when they are finally able to ride alone.

Not a fan of the idea.

I'm for the new sleds too. And I only had one ride with a sweetie and she hated the ride.
I am old. But still love Disneyland.
