  • News Tom Staggs on bringing Marvel to the parks

A very interesting article. I think we can all be relieved somewhat by that Tom says

"We were hard at work on attractions using Marvel characters previously, and that work has only intensified given (the film's) great success," Staggs, chairman of Disney's parks and resorts division, told Reuters in an interview at the park's Golden Vine Winery.
"The Avengers" has sold more than $1.3 billion worth of tickets around the world. Executives and Disney's designers, called "imagineers," are still working out how to bring characters like The Hulk, Iron Man and Captain America to the parks. "The setting has to be right, the story has to be right. That takes a fair amount of time," Staggs said.

An interesting article. Thanks for sharing. It is indeed a relief, both that they are bringin in some of these Marvel properties and that they are taking their time with them and not just sticking it in anywhere "willy nilly".

Re: Tom Staggs on bringing Marvel to the parks

        An interesting thing to note:

Disney is contractually restricted from bringing Marvel characters to its parks in Orlando, where they are licensed to Comcast Corp's Universal Studios.
So it sounds like they are going to focus their efforts on Anaheim...

I think this is more than proof that Disney knows what they're doing i.e. taking their time.

However, I wouldn't be shocked if the next big attraction announcement has something to do with the Avengers.

This is really nothing new. I think it's Marvel and their leadership that has stopped a true Disney-style onslaught on the parks. The Purchase price for Marvel was widely viewed as excessive. At first Disney's go to line was the large number of tertiary characters. Now it is The Avengers, the production and success of which have absolutely nothing to do with The Walt Disney Company.

Captain America on Main Street. Replace Cars Land with Avengers land.

I say take the Millionaire, Monsters Inc, and the place that is the arcade for the parties and put in something similar to the transformers ride but with the avengers for that space. It would fit in with the Hollywood area.

if they could work it out with Marvel, "Marvel Universe" would be a unique third gate....

I don't know if Marvel has enough properties to sustain a third gate to be honest. I mean, when people think Marvel including Spider-Man, Iron-Man, Hulk, Captain America, etc; they think of essentially E-ticket rides. A theme park can't be filled completely with those types of attractions, thus anything that isn't spectacular would be unjust to the brand and thus devalue anything else associated with the Marvel universe.

A Marvel theme park I feel would be too much, and an attraction or two in either park would be fulfill enough demand for people so they can get their Marvel fix as an E-ticket ride, because let's face it, anything else would be underwhelming.
"Up" is a relative concept. It has no intrinsic value.

To me this is the only way marvel would only work,

Disneyland and the revamped DCA are now set in stone! but the 3rd gate on Harbor Blvd would work for me as far as a marvel park!
