  • Love of the "Mother Road" across America...Route 66

    Howdy Pards,

Imagine growing up way back in the 1950's...and imagine the excitement in a young boy's heart when his Mom and Dad told him we were gonna drive all the way across country from Michigan to Disneyland way out in California. Now, I hadn't heard much about Route 66 when we started out...but, my Dad had always dreamed of drivin' it the whole length. And I wasn't on it for very long before I started to figure out why.

It grew on ya. When you started out in Chicago you kinda thought well it's just a road. But, it wasn't long before I discovered it was really a series of wonderful feelings...wonderful adventures. We crossed the mighty Mississippi River...land of Mark Twain and Riverboats and such...explored Meramec Caverns where deep inside the cave they had a beautiful formation called the curtain and Kate Smith once sang God Bless America there live...but they played a recording of it when we visited and, well, I always get goosebumps when I hear her singing that song. When we crossed over into Oklahoma we stopped at the Buffalo Ranch...and it was there that I had my very first Buffalo Burger! We traveled through Will Rogers country...then through the great American West...I remember those "Jackrabbit" Indian Trading Post signs well. So many things...delightful things were experienced on that journey...memories that have stuck with me for a lifetime.

Well...needless to say...the movie Cars stirred up those memories once again in great detail...and, now, Cars Land is very much like a monument to the Mother Road. You can FEEL the love that was put into every little detail of the place. It's a monument too, of course, to cars of all ages, shapes and sizes...a monument to the spirit of America in many ways...especially to small town America. It celebrates the good things in life...things like love and friendship and doing the right thing...

Well, I suspect I'm not the onliest one who feels this way about the film, and the park, and that wonderful Mother Road...I reckon it's called love...and, to my way of thinkin', that's a good thing. So...here's a sharp salute to the folks at Disney and Pixar...ya done good.

Adios for now. Talk to ya on down the trail.

    Howdy Pards,

Here's that beautiful Stage Curtain formation deep inside Meramec Caverns along Route 66 in Missouri. Kate Smith once sang God Bless America live and in person in front of this cave formation... It gives me goosebumps still, just thinkin' of the recording they played of that song when we visited all those years ago...

    Howdy Pards,

Well, I reckon it may not look like much these days but, to me as a boy, The Buffalo Ranch near Afton, Oklahoma meant we were really and truly headed West! Yessir, they had live buffalo and longhorns on exhibit...a real, honest-to-gosh, Indian Tradin' Post, and a little Western Cafe where...as I said earlier...this ol' cowhand, just a young whippersnapper back then, had his very first Buffalo Burger ever!

It was just one of the wonderful stops we made along the Mother Road. Ya gotta remember this was back in the day when cowboy heroes were mighty popular on TV and Radio...this was back in the days when I dreamed an awful lot about bein' a cowboy...driftin' the great America West...and lookin' out over vast herds of Buffalo...

Yep, the Buffalo Ranch...along Route 66...I reckon it'll be in my heart forever.

Adios for now. Talk to ya on down the trail.

P.S. Don't go lookin' for it these days...they tell me it's gone now...replaced by one of them modern convenience stores. Kinda makes this grizzled ol' feller wanna cry to be honest with ya...this here was a part of history...a part of my growin' up...and I reckon the happy memory of this here place will stay with me for all time... My gosh it was special...yessirreebob! It surely was...

      Howdy Pards,

Well, if you ain't wandered Route 66 much, you may not know that another place in the movie Cars, and now Cars Land, is based on a real, honest-to-gosh, genuine, authentic place out thar in Holbrook, Arizona.

Yessir, it's called the WIGWAM motel...

Those folks from PIXAR really did do some roadwork...

This is exactly how I feel!!! The movie, the ride, and the land are all so much more than just cars with cute little faces on them, toys and profits and whatnot. There is real heart, love, and charm there.
In the quest for quality, I have no problem with the characters footing the bill.

Dan thanks for sharing. Moving to California from the east coast we of course went on the 40 and seen a lot of Route 66. I really wanted to stop at some of the abandoned places because it just seems as people just left and it was preserved in time.

This made me appreciated the movie Cars a whole lot more and the people who actually got to drive on the Mother Road are very lucky to have the experience.

Thanks for a great post, Dan. I love the nostalgia for a simpler time. I think everyone ought to drive across the US at least once.
Having said that, my dad was in the Air Force and we moved a lot. Many, many times we'd drive cross-country, mid-summer with 3 kids in back and no air conditioning. It can get a little old after a few days. Flying is so great!
Our first trip out to San Bernardino, CA, we stayed in the Wigwam Motel in Rialto in a Tee pee. They are still open!
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.

Don't let this get out or everybody is gonna wanna go see it...but, the truth is Route 66
ran through some mighty beautiful stretches of America...
