  • [Question] Creating new "original" attractions at Disneyland.......

With talk of the subs going away, and replacing it with other attractions, I was wondering if Disney would consider bringing back the concept of original attractions here at Disneyland. By original, I'm referring to attractions with no tie-ins to movies, tvs, books, or any other intellectual properties they own.

For example, WDW has expedition everest, while Hong Kong Disneyland is getting Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway cars.

Most of my favorite rides in DL are the "original" ones: Space mountain, pirates, haunted, jungle cruise, splash moun...oh nevermind, splash was based on Song of the South.

I'd like to see something like that here in Disneyland again. The last great ride I can think of here is Soarin' but I'm sure I'm probably missing some others.

    Thoughts?

    Walt Disney World - 1996, 2011
    Tokyo Disney Resort - 2013
    Hong Kong Disneyland - 2013

I believe that what makes an attraction great is an originality to it. Not necessarily without movie tie in. Take star tours or indy or RSR. they've got movie tie ins, yet you are the focus of original ideas and stories. Nemo...not so much. You are basically watching the movie. I think the rides like nemo are the ones giving movie based rides a bad rep.
In the quest for quality, I have no problem with the characters footing the bill.

Actually the ride is a sequel to the movie.

I think they should too add some original rides. Correct me if im wrong, but isn't that one aspect of a Imagineer? To come up with new and creative ideas.

Originality is the company's true product. They need to have a constant supply of fresh new ideas, for both their films and their theme park projects. And those have to be better, more imaginative, more entertaining, more exciting, more innovative, more immersive and more original than their competitors. There's nothing wrong with basing an attraction on a film if the attraction offers a different experience, above and beyond the experience of just watching the film. It has to be an original experience, something you can't experience anywhere else, so that you go to the park for that experience. Why would people go to Carsland instead of just staying home and watching Cars? Because it offers an original experience that you can't get at home or at any other park. As long as the company keeps churning out originality they will stay in business.

I see what you mean about Nemo, and whether it's a sequel or not I feel like all I'm doing is watching the movie. That's one of the main reasons I don't enjoy that ride at all and wonder why there's constantly a huge wait for it.

And it's true, there can be rides with movie tie ins that are original and awesome. I do think they need to create more original rides, but at the same time I can see how that would be more difficult and how it would be hard to attract and audience to something out of left field.

          which is more appealing:
"come to Disneyland for an all new roller coaster!"
"come to Disneyland for a new ride based on the movie X, cruise aroung with y character and z character! It feels like you're in the movie!"

But at Disneyland, it shouldn't be - and for most of its history - it wasn't just "come to Disneyland for an all new roller coaster!" It was "come to Disneyland to journey into space, expore the jungle, sail with pirates, brave a haunted mansion, paddle down a frontier river."
In my mind, a LOT more than simply riding a new roller coaster.

One of my favorite attractions that originated in the parks was Alien Encounter at WDW. It was too bad it was replaced by the Stitch ride. Meh

Alien Encounter was amazing. I was so disappointed when I went back and it had become about Stitch.

Problem with that though was the stupid parents who didn't comprehend that Alien Encounter was terrifying and took their tiny children on it.

Disney can do original so well when they try. I don't see why it can't even be original things that started in other parks. Expedition Everest is AWESOME, I would love to see that brought here.
