  • [Chat] Disneyland Debate Thread: The Future Fate of the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage

In AL's recent article: Bon Voyage? - MiceAge.com, he mentioned that the Subs are looking to be permanetly removed from Tomorrowland.

A brief recap of the history of the attraction:

The original Submarine Voyage thru Liquid Space attraction was built as part of the "new" Tomorrowland in 1959, and closed on September 9, 1998. At that time, Disneyland's president, Paul Pressler, promised the press and Disneyland fans that the attraction would re-open with a new theme by 2003. One of the first attempts to resurrect the subs was banked on the success of the 2001 Disney animated film, Atlantis: The Lost Empire. However, when Atlantis flopped at the box office, an "Atlantis" themed photo spot was placed in front of the lagoon and plans of re-theming the based on the film were shelved.
However, the attraction remained untouched. Later, the entire lagoon became a scenic viewpoint. The submarines were stored inside the show building without maintenance. Pressler left, and the attraction's announced 2003 return date passed without action. When Matt Ouimet became the President of Disneyland Resort in 2003, there was new activity in the Submarine Lagoon. Neptune, one of the original eight submarines in the fleet, was moored at the old Submarine Voyage station dock for inspection by Walt Disney Imagineering in 2004.

The submarines were being tested to see if new animated show scenes would be visible from the portholes. Rumors spread quickly over the Internet, saying that an attraction based on the Disney/Pixar animated film Finding Nemo was going to finally replace Submarine Voyage. After months of speculation, on July 15, 2005, two days before the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland, the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage was officially announced at the new Turtle Talk with Crush attraction at DCA by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts President Jay Rasulo. The attraction was a huge success with fans when it opened, queue line times for boarding stretched to nearly four hours.

    From AL's article:
It's no secret that the Submarines have no friends in Anaheim’s operations departments, where they are disliked for their inefficiency, very low ride capacity (800 riders an hour at full speed), and very high cost of maintenance. The Submarines have the dubious distinction now of being the costliest attraction to operate and maintain at Disneyland, and just the cost of replacement bulbs alone for the underwater projection screens can tally tens of thousands of dollars per month.

Now I leave up to us to discuss what we think should be the future fate of the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. BEGIN!

If they are really that much of a headache to maintain then do it. If something much better is coming to replace it...DO IT!!!
In the quest for quality, I have no problem with the characters footing the bill.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, if they remove them, the Monorail will be the only remaining attraction from the old days. The subs have been there for over fifty years, even if the theme has changed. On the other hand, I do see the benefit of opening up all that space for new development. My hope would just be, that if they do decide to remove the subs, that whatever they install is a worthy tradeoff.

Re: Disneyland Debate Thread: The Future Fate of the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage

The lagoon creates some very necessary breathing room in a very crowded park, yet still contains an attraction. I think it would be a big mistake to eliminate the lagoon. Instead of the submarines maybe they could put in an underwater tube and an Omnimover system so that you could still ride through it and see the sights. Or have a walk-through underwater tube or moving sidewalk like the Shark Encounter at Sea World. I wouldn't shed a tear if they removed the Finding Nemo overlay. But to demolish the whole lagoon completely seems like a mistake to me. Is there no Imagination left in the world? They could come up with a new application for a large and beautiful feature instead of thinking only in terms of bulldozers. How about moving Autopia over to Carsland and then creating a new land, from the sub lagoon north to Small World, with an oceanic theme, like a micro version of DisneySea, but with a few new attractions? All it takes, really, is some vision and creative, imaginative thinking and diligent, thoughtful, dedicated work, to re-purpose an under utilized area of the park into a beautiful new, attractive and exciting land... and that's a task they just accomplished with Carsland, so they are capable of it.

It's the only "clean" body of water to look at in the park, but the lagoon could be kept (whether or not there's a ride in it) while demolishing the underground and Autopia parts without changing the existing scenery and still freeing up considerable space. I would be sad to see Autopia completely disappear. I loved Autopia before I could drive and still have all those cherished memories of steering really really badly! Since it's mostly for kids I would be all for a scaled-back version, but with hybrid or electric vehicles.

Re: Disneyland Debate Thread: The Future Fate of the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage

I just wonder how much the overlay added to the maintenance cost. I know the chlorine and water combo was a big issue over the lifespan of the attraction, but that was "manageable" at the time. The low capacity was also an issue. All that taken into consideration, ask yourself this, if the Nemo overlay was a success would this even be a rumor?

I wonder if John is willing to admit Nemo's overlay was an expensive flop and try to save the subs or if he'll blame the subs for their own demise.

If they can create a area much like they did in DCA then I am all for it. Yes it will be sad, but I get excited when I think of what my son will be able to experiance.

Well, it's quite a bit of land. Let's say for conservatism's sake, that they install three attractions. I'd say two of the three (the more major attractions) would be movie-based and the one smaller one would be original.

Submarines, and the freeway are a daily part of our lives now and no longer something of 'Tomorrow'

That land could be used to be something much much better
There is no right or wrong in this debate. It is simply a matter of perspective.

What makes them part of our daily lives, and not part of tomorrow, is the scene itself. If we were to travel rover style vehicles through various alien terrains and encountered a variety of alien species that wouldn't be "part of our daily lives". If we traveled in a submarine and studied alien life forms from aquatic worlds that would be something of "Tomorrow" considering we haven't even left Earth yet!

I bet a majority would be film based. It would be nice to see a non film themed ride.

True, existing technologies in alien terrain would make for an much more interesting ride and dynamic and fit the exploration of the unknown theme of Tomorrowland much better.

But I dont see enhancements like that happening

Although I had previously been thinking of the below idea for the old Motor Boat Cruise location, perhaps the Submarine Voyage lagoon -- with it's beautiful clarity and coral rock -- may be a better location for...

                                      Never Land!

This would be a mini-land featuring an expanded Peter Pan dark ride (larger flying galleons, bigger scenes, interactive Lost Boys "slingshots" to fire at targets and score), a relocated Pixie Hollow meet-and-greet area, a Jake and the Never Land Pirates play area and trails, including Captain Hook's pirate ship and Skull Rock (flashback to the past!) with water-cannons and refreshing mist-filled caves. The area would be complete with some food service and a all-things-Never Land shop.

For all the reasons stated in Al's article, I think it's time for the Subs to go. The ride I grew up with is long gone and the Nema overlay is not very repeatable. I've heard rumors of a retro, 1950s themed city of the future planned for Tomorrowland and if done well it could be amazing. My guess is WDI has something huge planned if there looking at committing that much real estate.
