  • [Rumor] Third Park to be Marvel Theme?

    Interesting snippet from Al's column:

It’s no coincidence then that WDI has mocked up a detailed model of an entirely new theme park based solely on Marvel characters and stories, featuring mainly thrill rides and energetic shows aimed at teens and adults. And WDI, always looking for their next big gig, conveniently used the roughly 100 acres available to Disney on and around the Toy Story Parking Lot as their exact footprint for this new park model. The Marvel park could also be slotted in as a second park at either the Hong Kong or Shanghai resorts sometime in the next decade (or later), but the third park expansion land in Anaheim is the location where this concept would likely first appear.
I would just love to see that model.

I’m not sure how I feel about Disney pigeon holing an entire park to Marvel but I do think it’s the best option for these properties. It would be a huge draw for teens and Superheros don’t seem to be fading anytime soon so this might be a golden ticket idea. I just hope that if done the third gate would be given the talent and money to do it right. I do like the idea of seeing something completely different coming from Disney parks.

if done right and turns out great, but if the budget is cut why even build it hopefully they learned from DCA 1.0 that doing it on the cheap wont get great results. But if this park was done with the money, time, and talent that got put into carsland I'm all in for it go Marvel!

I would think that Disney would have learned from the billion that they just had to reinvest into CA Adventure and would not just target the teen and adult demographic. A park needs to have an equal mix of thrill rides, classic dark rides, and yes, even a few spinners. There must also be immersive theming, good food (not just rubber burgers between stale, dry buns) and unique merchandise offerings. If Disney puts as much effort into this park as they did into the two new lands at CA Adventure, they can really have something good on their hands with this new park.

The Marvel Universe is contantly expanding and branching out into every bit of main stream media these days that its getting more and more impossible to ignore. (I didn't even realize that I was typing this I was drinking my Dr. Pepper with The Avengers plastered all over it)

I would love to see what they could do with an entire 3rd park but it would be interesting to see how it would come about. Would you bring in Marvel Universe artists to help with detail and theming? Would you break out the big guns and bring Stan Lee in as an advisor or overseer to the park? I definitely would NOT want it to be just a bunch of coasters painted the color of some super hero with a plywood sign with whatever super hero "ride" its supposed to be named after. I wouldn't mind seeing maybe 1 or 2 but I would love to see an interactive world with great concepts and immersive story telling and theme details.

The only issue I would have, and I know its just the nerd in me, but I would hope they wouldn't center everything aroumd JUST the movies that have been put out. I know they are the reason why a park would be built but there are SOOOO many more rich stories and characters in the Marvel Realm and I would hate it to be stuck to just movies.

I totally agree, and i think it would be a waste of the marvel roster because right now disney doesn't own movie rights to all marvel.

Its wrong to target an entire park to this kind of audience. It failed like others have pointed out with Disney California Adventure. Disney need to re think this stategy. Teen and adults have parks like Universal, Knotts and Six Flags already in the market place. These parks only have a small fraction of the attendance share that Disney recieves each year from its family aimed parks. And besides themeparks are not all about attendance and its merchandise sales and food. Are the teen to young adult market willing to buy this stuff to the same level that the Disney crowd do each year.

Mavel is one of the most marketable brands in exsistance....look at the numbers for Avengers.

The money will come no matter what, but it's the quality that's in question. Marvel appeals to both kids/teens and adults. Adults like me grew up with superheros and kids love them. If we get disney quality I think the 3rd gate will be an awesome addition, and a nice change to what we have with DCA and Disneyland.

Could not agree more! A 5 billion dollar budget and rides for the whole family to enjoy this could be an amazing park! I will even take Disney characters in marvel costumes to tie it together!

No disputing Marvel is very suscessful at the Box Office. But will it work for the themepark audience. Look at Islands of Adventure. Its not since the arrival of Potter has that Park really taken off in a positive way. Marvel is popular but is it popular enough to have its own park. Targetting males and you are missing a huge number of your audience. With Disneyland now wanting to be the Westcoast Disney World. Its going to have to appeal and provide multiple day experiences for all Members of the Family. A family with two young Princesses are not going to want to be taken around a Marvel themed thrill park. And so will visit DL & DCA and avoid spending an extra day here for this proposed other park. And I still have to question will teens be willing to buy up huge amounts of Marvel inspired merchandise. Disney needs to re think the concept and come up with something thats going to appeal to everyone. Not just one group of people who likely won't spend the money to help increase revenues at this park.

If they expand, does this mean our annual passes will jump another 200+ like last time?

                        Walt Disney World - 1996, 2011
                        Tokyo Disney Resort - 2013

I think a lot of it has to do with the way the attractions are presented. A roller coaster with the name of a superhero slapped on it isn't going to have the same effect as a fleshed out, Disney quality attraction.

The point i was making is that the brand of marvel sells like hotcakes. walk into a walmart or target and tell me just how much merch you see with a marvel character slapped on to it, most of it aimed at kids/teens.

I merely sited the avengers numbers as a gage for popularity in all demographics

I just wanted to re-iterate my posting from a couple weeks back http://micechat.com/forums/disneylan...post1056786277

Other than movie merchandise and promotional campaigns for "The Avengers", Marvel has yet to invade Disney Parks. I do believe that they have waited to see how "The Avengers would do, so the news that the film will be the catalyst for a theme park attraction is not that surprising. If Anaheim will be the initial location for the Marvel universe, I would assume that Disney will use existing locations/regions that pertain to Marvel properties that people are most acquainted to. If Disney is thinking short term, this will probably be the most practical way. If the plan will take place in Disneyland, certainly the Innoventions and Captain E.O. buildings should be considered as prime real estate for such attraction(s). If it's at DCA, I could totally see it in Hollywoodland, providing that the ideology that the Marvel Cinematic Universe would capture the film theming that the region is (or could be) known for... the Muppets and Millionaire properties could be merged in order to take benefit of the available space.

As of now, I am part of the group who believes deeply that a Marvel theme park could have the potential to be a promising third gate. I would love Disney to challenge itself and create a whole new park based on the comic book world that they paid two billion dollars for. The Marvel universe is infinite, and there are numerous of possibilities to create a unique atmosphere with top-notch Disney Imagineering. How bout going into Professor Xavier's Institute and engulfing yourself into Cerebro? Or how about transporting yourself into the world of Asgard and the Mighty Thor? There are various time periods and worlds that a Marvel theme park could be divided into, I'm pretty sure that Disneyland resort's prime clientale, TOURISTS, will be willing to stay an extra day if a diverse setting filled with Marvel properties would be built. If Disney wants to compete with Universal, I could totally see this idea of a third gate as something revolutionary, being that Disney would deliever on quality and fun for the whole family.

The success of "The Avengers" film shows that comic book characters have broad appeal, there will be an audience for such a theme park. If my adventures at Comic-Con has taught me anything, there is certainly a population of people that are willing to engulf themselves into a universes that Marvel has created. There is so much justification that would enhance Marvel into the Disney company if something like this existed. I'm also pretty sure that strict Disney-purists would breathe a sign of relief if Marvel properties would be segregated from being infused at DL or DCA.
Comic book fans are very loyal to their brands, just like Disney fans. An idea of a theme park like this will hold much justification in the potential audience it would bring, a well built Marvel park would provide a Comic-Con party 365 days a year. This will certainly help add an additional day for tourists to congregate at the Disneyland Resort.

I think it is eventual that a Marvel theme park must think outside the box and not rely too much on the Marvel films, especially if they plan to reboot these things every other decade. They could totally do an X-Men attraction without plastering cameos from Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman, as long as they decide to go more into the source material - which is ultimately infinite.

I would hope that the right players have learned their lessons from the accidents of DCA 1.0. If the proposed theme park is held with the same quality that Cars Land and Buena Vista Street is made out of, I can certainly see long term success.

I agree about the Hulk coaster and Dr Dooms drop ride. But the theming around the area is up to Disney's standard. And the Spiderman is certainly something you would expect to find at Disney.

I'm not disputing this point at all. I am not dead set against the idea of adding Marvel to the parks. But to have an entire park dedicated. Sorry I'm not convinced. Unless the Resort wants to attract a completely new audience this park will not work with the current Disneyland park goer. And its my understanding Management want to make Disney a multiple day destination.

I don't think Anaheim is the place for this. When people think Anaheim they think Disneyland and Mickey Mouse. Look at what they learned from the 50th anniversary and from DCA 1.0. I believe that regardless of the popularity of this franchise (and I love Marvel), a park like this would be empty. And we Micechatters would call it DCA--Redux.

Take the money you want to spend on this and further improve what we have. There are plenty of projects to be done.

I love...love Marvel..but a whole theme Park? To me it sounds like too much of a good thing....why not just a land...with an Avengers show....Ironman Coaster....A Spiderman Mini Coaster/dark ride....and some sort of water ride

There are just too many good idea's out there to make a theme parks based solely on ONE idea

Im most worried about what the park as a whole will look like. Harry potter has the awesome wizarding world to flesh out. Cars land had the giant rock formations and the cute town of RS...but what about marvel? What are the marvel lands going to look like? The only marvel land I can think that will be pleasant to be in will be stark expo. Everything else takes place in a boring generic city. Xaviers mutant school might be cool.
In the quest for quality, I have no problem with the characters footing the bill.
