  • [Chat] Tomorrowland transportation to be removed?

So with the possible removing of innoventions, autopia, and the subs... The majority of the people mover tracks and the monorail station station sit right in the middle of it, so are people expecting these things to be worked around, refined, or possibly taken out completely? What's your preference? After hearing how unlikely it is for the people mover to return, I guess thats going, and if we ever want the monorail tracks to be expanded out, we may want that to be removed from the park.

I hadn't thought about that yet, and I'm wondering if Lutz would say about this

Well there is no peoplemover to remove....

I am of the Walt Disney/Steve jobs mold. Nothing at Disneyland should be sacred it was meant to always be a work in progress so tear down whatever is outdated or is in the way to make way for newer, bigger and better things. Carsland was our first real breath of fresh air since Indiana jones over 15 years ago! It's time for new, new, new, new!

I think the Tomorrowland monorail station makes an ideal location and don't know why its removal would be considered... It fits the theme of TL well in my opinion and can't really see it anywhere else besides DCA...

My ideal would be for theMonorail to stay, but a new version of a People Mover added in. If they could use the same tracks, then fine, but in a perfect world with a magic genie, they'd build a new People Mover.

It is my understanding that WDI was given strict orders by TDA not to change the Monorail route ever again due to the enormous expense incurred when IJA construction required that the beam be moved. Is this ban still in place? Hopefully, the Monorail will survive and not be demolished (which would also be quite expensive).

I don't see why this would even come up as a question. If anything the train breaks the theme of Tomorrowland. The stop should really be in Frontierland and skip Tomorrowland altogether, but that leaves too big a gap I guess.

This wasn't really a question but more of a discussion, and also unless that monorail ban is true I feel keeping it inside a park would be limiting it chance to ever expand to a third gate or a garden walk area.

If you look at the Google Map of Tomorrowland, you can see that the monorail almost makes a "Figure 8" over Autopia, and the People mover track also zig zags over this area. I think Walt wanted a sense of the kinetic energy of the future, and when the monorail was first built, it didn't go all the way out to the Disneyland hotel, it was an attraction in itself.

I would guess that they would have to re-route the monorail out of this area, such that it just circles the Matterhorn and then stops at the station before shooting straight out of the park.

When the People mover was going, this was a pretty active part of the park, I remember riding the People mover and seeing, at about the same time, the monorail go by, the sky-way go through the Matterhorn, the subs and Autopia below. If they built something on the People Mover's footprint, (i.e. tear down the track and build a new one in its place as they already got the path laid out), it would return this sense of kinetic energy to Tomorrowland.

If they remove the Autopia, Subs, re-route monorail, and plop down an E-Ticket, it would make Tomorrowland more like Epcot, where you've got big pavilions and landscaping between them. The monorail station would have a nice view of . . . concrete and whatever they build. The people mover really tied the old Tomorrowland together, giving a sense of activity.

If they get $500 million for this project, (I'm guess for the construction of an E-Ticket and a D-ticket just to replace lost ride capacity), then rerouting the monorail track slightly won't seem that expensive in comparison.

I say get rid of the monorail as guests don't really use it as transportation anymore, DCA and downtown Disney are within walking distance. Should a third gate be built, the monorail alone won't be able to handle the traffic, they'll need a People Mover 2.0. I love the monorails at WDW as you get great views of nature and I'd always have them, but the Disneyland monorail has seen better days, isn't the AC underpowered and they have to close it down on hot days or something?

Plus, the monorail track *wrecks* the views in BVS (IMHO), Hollywood land, and I guess some people don't like it wrapping around the matterhorn. If they are going to do the expansion good, then take out the monorail, the rotting People Mover track, and everything to start anew.

I do NOT want to be up on the monorail platform reminiscing about the old days when the monorail went through the submarine lagoon, and would hate to see the monorail "hold back" the construction of a new E-Ticket. Trying to build an attraction around the can of worms of monorail track would be a nightmare.

I thought there was that exit every 15-foot rule from the state OSHA that has guaranteed we will never see the People Mover again. The Monorail works fine, and yeah, I understand moving the tracks was something like $1.5 million per foot, so that stays no matter what, and there are times when my feet are quite happy with the train at Tomorrowland, theme or not.

Isn't there some thing in the books regarding the Monorail being the first in the Western Hemisphere and therefore it can't be removed?

A lot of people have been throwing around the removal of the monorail. This hasn't been mentioned anywhere. I would think they would relocate the station and make it fit the new theme. There is no way they take it out. That would mess with the logistics of the park considering it is a gate to DtD. As for the PM I don't want it removed per say. Maybe the old track removed but a newer version of transportation throughout the TL area whatever that may be.

I think they can keep the outside lagoon area of the subs and the Monorail station, while still having plenty of room to work with, and build around.

I bet they might consider taking the monorail out, doesn't Downtown Disney begin immediately west of the esplanade? I don't use them, but they also got trams transporting guests.

The monorail track, the monorail service barn or whatever it is called, is all located in this area. They'd have a hard time building in this area. They'd have to surgically remove the Autopia and Sub show building below, People Mover tracks, and they'd still be left with monorail tracks everywhere. I don't think they could just have the monorail zoom in and around the show building as the intrusion would probably ruin whatever they would be trying to build.

I don't think the monorail costs $1.5 million per foot, maybe something like $30 million to reroute the monorail, which is what they will probably do.

I wonder if guests of the Disneyland Hotel like the monorail as it delivers you to Disneyland, not DCA, and hence if you want to go to DCA first, you have to get a Park hopper and then walk over from Tomorrowland. Too bad they didn't put a monorail station in DCA, that would be convenient for guests at Disneyland Hotel.

I like the monorail, but when the trees for autopia come down, you'll be seeing alot more of the track, which isn't necessarily super attractive. The monorail track around the Matterhorn blends in as it is (or at leas was) similar to the ran rocks, and trees help hide it there too. When they start constructing (if they do go ahead with this plan), they'll have to tear down the unsightly monorail beams.

I voted for leave them both. While I know the PeopleMover won't be back (I sure loved riding them in WDW last Jan), the tracks provide the only shade in the area. I also view the Monorail as a "ride" and not just transportation. I would hate to see it gone from Tomorrowland.

I think the people mover should get an upgrade, but the monorail should stay.

I've used the monorail before and it is amazing. Not only is it a cool ride, you can skip the line into Disneyland. It's like an attraction all-together.

It's time for new, new, new, new!
you dont appreciate the parks then. if nothing is sacred then why bother?

The monorail is not going anywhere. I hope they do something with those tracks. I know the Rocket Rods was a failure but I'm sure they can think of something else to put there.
