  • [Question] Picnic Spiral?

    From the Lagoon of Liquidspaceman...
I was looking at an overhead view of DL and just noticed a place I have never heard of, Picnic Spiral. It is located south of the Jungle Cruise and to the left of the news stand. It is also right below the Monorail track. I wished I had known about it, as it looks a bit interesting. Does anybody have any information and pictures on this little piece of real estate? Any pictures of the monorail, from here?

I haven't personally been there, but the few times I've gotten off the Tram on the IJA side I've seen it. Looks quaint!

Picnic Area | Guest Services | Disneyland Resort

Did you know there is an official picnic area located at the Disneyland Resort conveniently located near the entrance to Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure? If you were aware of it,…

    Hope that helps!

Thank you explodingboy for the first piece to the puzzle. From the pictures it doesn't look like it has any elevation, but google maps, on satellite view appears to have some height.

No problem! Like I said, I haven't ever been over there but I would imagine that it is all the same height. Hopefully someone who has been there can clarify for you.

It's ground level. Pretty large picnic area with lockers, restrooms, and drink machines. It's surrounded by foliage that has twinkle lights.

            Very cool!

Do you think outside food is allowed in catered form? Like if I wanted to have a birthday party there, I could get Pollo Locco and other stuff. Their food is delicious! I like 4 pc with beans and corn. That would be so cool!

We ate there once years and years ago. It was a concrete area with tables, isolated by 10 foot bushes and covered with with green nylon awnings. It was fairly hot. It's the Disneyland option for bringing your own food to the park.

It's outside of the security area so I can't imagine why not, unless you're trying to resell food or bring something that creates a huge mess.

                        Re: Picnic Spiral?

I actually thought it was rather pleasant. True, no theming, per se, but clean, shaded, planted, and a nice place to "get away from it all" and still just be feet away from the front entrance. At the cost of their food, it's a nice option.

Of course, since security doesn't really stop people with food, you can bring it into the park, as well.

                          Re: Picnic Spiral?

We took a cake in there once for a group of people. It was very nice to have a place to do that at the park. And as others have said, it is simply a picnic area where you can bring food and eat, they lockers and soda vending. For people traveling from out of town and trying to save money it is a great place to store food for lunches/breaks and come out and sit and eat.
Stalking is when two people go for a long romantic walk together but only one of them knows about it.

                            Re: Picnic Spiral?

The picnic area has been around for quite some time, it was there prior to the construction of DCA over by those restrooms (which used to be much more popular). I know the area was there at least through the 90s, and most likely since the closure of Holidayland I would guess there was some sort of picnic area near the lockers. There used to always be people there, but it wasn't as nearly as nice as it is today (even simpler than it is now)!

When DCA was built they enclosed the picnic area with a hedge and made it park like in some ways. Between the picnic area being enclosed and I think how far away the parking was (thereby discouraging people from going back to their cars to get food) you started to see less people there than pre-DCA. Then after 9/11 with the increase in security and the creation of the security checkpoints the picnic area became extremely difficult to get to as they arranged the picnic area to be on the outside of the security checkpoint with the lockers on the inside. For awhile they had a guard there who'd let you pass through security that way if you had food but eventually they stopped that. For the most part now it's pretty quite even on busy days.

Thank you for all the good info, sbk1234, DLANDFansAz, TTN, and others. I remember seeing pictures of a bigger picnic area, back in the 50's, is this what that area has morphed into today? I've been going to DL since the early 60's and have never seen, or remembered this place. I guess you learn something new about DL everyday, if you look hard enough.

I remember seeing signs to a picnic area back in the 70s. We went to investigate, and found a small, rectangular little area, surrounded by walls of ivy (if I remember correctly.) Very drab, very uninspired. In every measurable sense, this picnic area is far superior.
While I'm not crazy about leaving the park, even for food, at least with this current picnic area I feel like I'm still in the midst of Disney.
