    [Chat] Chinese food in DCA

Think we'll get it anytime soon? It's way over due. Just a li'l place where one can get some noodles, some rice, an egg roll, pot stickers, a spicy bowl, .....

        Great idea!

I like Panda Express. I had a 2 item combo the other day. It was with fried rice, orange chicken (YUM!), and mushroom chicken! I get an egg roll and the orange sauce! Sometimes I'll get hot sauce, but that is only if I have noodles.

I would love if they served it somewhere in the park. Maybe put it in DCA!

Lucky Fortune Cookery is nice, but it doesn't have a wide variety. When I went for my birthday in May, all my friend wanted were some chow mein noodles and I was so sorry that I couldn't help him out. :P

here's a link to their menu: Lucky Fortune Cookery Menu - Disney California Adventure I think I remember the portions being fairly big. Big portions are a must for me otherwise I'm hungry in like an hour or less!

Love the food there. Portion sizes are fairly large. I shared the spicy korean beef with vegetables and rice with a friend and it was a perfect size I believe they have some kind of orange chicken, but can't remember.

Just to note, Lucky Fortune Cookery is typical "Americanized" Chinese Food, but it's good. We have a lot more meat in the dishes (instead of a small sliver mainly for the taste) and some of the ingredients are totally different because they were available locally, so Chefs modified the recipes accordingly. Chow Mein and the Fortune Cookie are totally US inventions. Then we got Bok Choy and such to grow here, and added them in.

And from what I hear, some of the American style things we invented here have migrated back to China because the visitors liked them, and took the ideas back. It's a Small World After All. :ap:

It's a long video, but totally worth it to discover some of the history of American versions of Chinese cuisine.

Starbucks is already at the resort, Panda is not a big step away.

At Uni, we have a Panda which is very popular with guests, and the Hollywood Grill in the park serves non-americanized Chinese food to the tour groups, which is very popular.

You're half right. Chow Mein really is authentically Chinese (there are many regional variants around the world as a result of Chinese emigration, but it did originate in the Taishan area of Guangdong Province in Southern China), but the Fortune Cookie WAS created in the US - by a Japanese American in Los Angeles, ironically enough, named Seiichi Kito, whose family still operates a very successful bakery in Little Tokyo. It was then copied and popularized by a Chinese American proprietor named David Jung (the first mass producer of the fortune cookie).

Nice try, but that isn't entirely accurate, either. Chow mein, although a type of noodle, isn't classified as "pasta," which is an Italian term. The Chinese invented noodles over 4000 years ago. Arabic traders loved them, and developed a type of noodle based on what grew in the Middle East, namely durum wheat. (When durum wheat is milled, the endosperm is ground into a granular product called semolina.) There was no durum wheat in China or Italy, it only grew in the Middle East at the time. Pasta is made exclusively from durum semolina. Arabs later introduced durum semolina noodles to Italy, and the locals in Italy made it their own. Now, chow mein noodles are made from wheat flour, but not from durum wheat semolina. The type of wheat flour that makes chow mein noodles is most assuredly NOT durum wheat, and certainly not durum semolina. Chow mein (jau mein in Cantonese) is a lye-water (or egg) noodle made from, in most cases, flour made from common wheat.
