  • [Question] How do Roz/Robot in Star Tours/Crush work?

I've never understood how these guys work.
Is it actually someone's job to sit behind a voice modulator and talk for them?
Or does it have some super advanced ability to make comments based on what the guest looks like/is wearing/etc...doubt it.

Someone please explain if you know how these three work?

    Thanks!

I don't know about Star Tours and Crush but there is someone controlling what Roz and Mr. Potato Head say. I know this because I had two friends that worked at DCA, one at Monsters and one at TSMM. I hope somone can answer for Star Tours and Crush!

For Roz on Monster's Inc., there is someone in the back somewhere who can see the guests who semi-tells Roz what to say. There are lots of different things that she can say and the person in the back will choose which saying best fits the guests in the vehicle. I always wear my Minnie ears and a couple of times she's said something along the lines of, "You! Lady in the back row! Nice ears."

As for the Robot in Star Tours (whose name completely escapes me), he's on a loop. It's coincidence that at times he may say something about a person that may sound as if he is directing it personally at you because of something you're doing or wearing.

Crush's controlling is my favorite. There is a live actor backstage both controlling and speaking for crush. The actor can see out into the audience and speak to them while he sits in front of controls that creates crush's body and face movements. I imagine a computer does the moving of the mouth.

I love the Crush show. Thanks for the explanation on how it all works! The talent behind the works deserves a big pat on the back!

thank you!! that's disappointing to hear the Star Tours dude isn't actually someone talking...it's very well timed then because he's said some very specific things to me,

Re: How do Roz/Robot in Star Tours/Crush work?

If I'm not mistaken, the voice of the robot in the Star Tours queue is that of Patrick Warburton, the same actor who gives the safety talk prior to boarding Soaring Over California. His voice is pitched up a bit but it has the same speaking cadence.

Patrick Warburton is also the voice of the Star Tours pilot Ace. The one that C-3PO accidentally takes the place of. Both of the G2 scanner droids are on a pre-recorded loop.
