        Re: The Streets of Disneyland

hmmmm --- I question some of this. Does anyone else out there feel that way. Where did the author get this information from. Are these names official? How and why are they used? The one I seriously take issue with is the "Esplanade" - I always thought that the Esplanade referred to the plaza at the main gate to the park. I have NEVER heard the area aside NOS referred to as the Esplanade, and I worked in the park. Who calls it that??? Any insight?

          Re: The Streets of Disneyland

I saw "esplanade" in that location on goole maps weeks ago. It is still there take a look. From all reports, it is one of many errors on google maps (see 2 splash mtns!!!). I think it is a google error, and this was passed into his article (directly or indirectly).

            Re: The Streets of Disneyland

I'm sure these names are official. If not then there must be some type of nomenclature out there that officially designates certain areas of the park, if only for emergency purposes. Suppose there is an emergency near the Matterhorn. It is much better to say, "It is to the east of Matterhorn Way." than it is to say, "It is near that area between the Matterhorn and Alice In Wonderland."

But also I would like to mention that IMO this is not strictly a Disney invention. Knott's Berry Farm had street names in its Ghost Town long before Disneyland even existed. I would feel that it is fairly safe to say that Walt Disney actually "borrowed" this idea from Walter Knott, rather than Walt Disney coming up with this idea himself.

Yeah the esplanade was cracking me up. It's totally a google error.

                  Re: The Streets of Disneyland

"Esplanade" is not an error, it is on the street signs in NOS. I believe that the area between the parks that many call the esplanade is officially the "Main Entrance Plaza".

I will have to take a look at the signs, never saw one there before.

Regardless, google maps has many errors and is NOT a good source for research. I hope the author didn't use it for that purpose. If one were to believe google maps, there are currently TWO innoventions buildings (one is Space).

According to google maps, the access path to the Fantasyland Theater is the SF&DL Street... is this accurate? Who knows? It's google. ...and it changes constantly!

                        Re: The Streets of Disneyland

Well - I worked at the park - and you would think if these names are used for emergency purposes to evacuated people, they would have bothered to pass that little tid bit of info onto the cast members, but this info was never shared. I really do question the Esplanade thing though. If an annual pass-holder could take a picture of a sign to prove it, then i will shut up about it, But I have never seen any sign anywhere in the park that says that. I have been to Disneyland literally thousands of times, no exaggeration. I am not saying it is not true, I just want concrete proof.
