  • Red Car News Boys Show Change

I noticed the Red Car New Boys have begun exiting towards BVS instead of Hollywood Land at the end of their show (the car enters from HTH). I am guessing that this was done to improve the running of the red car itself, as it is quite a long journey back towards HTH from Carthay that required switching the direction of the trolley wire. Now, the show no longer has to sit in front of Carthay as the line above the car is changed and can instead depart immediately. I know the show did have a substantial effect on the running of the trolley. Does anyone have any news on why this was done beyond my speculation?

The one downside is of course that at the end of the show Mickey exclaims that he is "Off to Hollywood Land"... and then takes off in the opposite direction. A minor point, but one that made me wonder as the show now only seems to operate in one direction, why not have the show start from BVS and then head into Hollywood Land to save the story. Thoughts?

    For reference, old show ending:

On an aside I actually think the music is alright, "Seize the Day" is even Alan Menken's.

It just has an annoying beat to it. If they removed the beat I think I'd like it more.

Hi I love Buena Vista Street and the street atmosphere but I really don't like the Red Car News Boys Show. It is reallllly cheesy and even my kids think so. The music is too recent and doesn't add to the feel unlike Five-and-Dime which adds a lot to Buena Vista Street and I like a lot more. I think they should just retire the Red Car News Boys or drastically change it. Just my two cents

I was there earlier today, and while I didn't see the show, I noticed that one trolley now operates during the day. Shortly before the change, the trolleys would shut down completely between the first Newsboy show and the second parade.

I've seen many parade shows at the resort since the 90s and I have to say, this is by far the worst and most excruciating one I've ever witnessed. I feel horrible saying that too since I know somebody in it :-/

I'd rather watch Eureka or Celebrate.

The thing that irritates me the most is the show's historical inaccuracy. At 3:13 the character screams "I hope California gets a team of their own!" while in fact in the 1920s and 1930s teams such as the Los Angeles Angels, the Hollywood Stars, and the San Francisco Seals were in full force. They weren't major league teams, but in an era of no television and no access to major league stadiums, they were regarded as highly as any other east coast major league team would have been at the time.

I'd say, scrap that portion of the show and it would be fine. Plus, it would shorten it and make it a bit less cheesy.

Or, a thought just came to me. They could also change the dialogue. They could say instead, "I can't wait to see the Hollywood Stars play their next game!" (They probably couldn't mention the Los Angeles Angels due to rights issues). Instead of being cheesy and lame, this could be an opportunity to entice some people in the audience to find out who the Hollywood Stars were, and to learn more about the Pacific Coast League and the history of baseball in California.

Whoa Whoa Whoa! While I believe the show needs a bit of tweaking, I don't think it should be retired! For those first time guests that don't understand Buena Vista Street, the Red Car Trolley News Boys do a great job in explaining it all. Not every guest knows that in 1923, Walt came to California to pursue his dreams. I think the show is an "Aha" moment for some guests.

Meanwhile, Five and Dime is truly "atmosphere". It's there to set the mood for the land.

Sorry, Disney Dance Crew was still the worst show ever. This is still not that bad. (I agree with the heading to Hollywood but actually travelling away from it part. Dumb.)
It's actually "Cars Land", not "Carsland".

Five and Dime is great. I was really happy to see some good entertainment! Newsboys could also be atmospheric, they just need an updated version of the show.

Disney Dance Crew was pretty silly. I was sorely disappointed. Disney needs to be careful with the trends that they are following.

Trivial: The telegram lady reads that Mickey's audition is in Hollywood Land but then as you guys pointed out already Mickey says that he is going to Hollywood. Hollywood is northwest to DL so the trolley is going at the right direction.

Anyway back to the point I think recently they reverted back to the original format in which they change the overhead wire and go back to Hollywood Land. You can search for recent clips online but I am including the July 9 clip someone filmed below because of the small mishap:

I actually liked it when the music cut out and they kept singing. They really need to get rid of the techno-remix and make it more like Five and Dime. I don't mind how cheesy it is but it works better without trying to sound all hip.

As a 'fansie' here, I super enjoyed the Red Car Newsboys!

However, I would agree that if the music was tweaked a bit to remove a lot of the modern, electronic beat, I would enjoy it that much more.

I think it's great that someone decided to add a show that references the Newsies, despite that the movie wasn't so popular (especially in comparison to the stage show).

But I do agree, bits of it are cheesy and I don't understand the need for a 'hip', 'modern', score when they could have easily done with more theme appropriate music I guess?

All in all, a few minor tweaks would most definitely do this show some good, but scrapping it all together? I probably wouldn't advocate for it.

I like the show because it's cheesy and fun, I'm glad they have trolley depart to backstage from the performance area instead of going to the front of the park to switch the wire. When I saw the show last Sunday they shortened "Suitcase and a Dream" by referencing the inventors with dialogue instead as part of the song, show as pretty much been the same otherwise...though I've seen a news boy read Mickey's telegram.

I'd probably enjoy the show more if the participants actually sang. I'm probably in the minority on this, though.

If we're talking about the same show I saw, none of the performers in the Trolley were singing. It was all lipped.

From the various clips I saw I think the performers do sing. If you go back to the clip in my earlier post here, when there was a short circuit, the singers just kept on singing even when the music and the mic were off.

At other times the singers do improvise the songs (a lot from the yellow-shirted "Johnny"). That said, I haven't seen the show in person so maybe others can correct me if I were wrong.
