  • Video Footage of original Disneyland sign in Randy Newman video

As a part of my recent obsession with the music of Randy Newman, I watched one of his only legitimate music videos, the one for "I Love L.A.". While watching it, I noticed several snatches of footage of Disneyland circa 1983. The first is a second of the Matterhorn and a monorail seen at 2:25 (accentuating the line "Look at that mountain"). However, the more interesting piece to me is footage of the original Disneyland sign seen at about 3:05. I've never seen it from that angle or in motion before. I had even assumed it was gone by the 80's. Very interesting, and the imagry comes with a great song to boot!

You can see the video here:

If I'm not mistaken that sign was on Harbor for quite some time in the 80's. I think in the 90's it was replaced with the blue sign and then that was torn down later.

That has always been a high point of that video for me.

Pretty cool, I grew up in the 90's so for me the Blue Sign will always be my favorite sign but cool to see the old one too
        Happy Halloween!!!

I love seeing the monorail too. The Matterhorn and monorail were the height of the video for me. Thanks for sharing it.

It's nice seeing one's city sights in a video. I'm not from LA, but being from Chicago, I understand the emotional connection.

I always really enjoyed hearing the instrumental version of that in DCA. It just fit so perfectly.

Now can anyone figure out what they have written on the sign as it goes by?

                      From what I can tell:
                      OPEN WED-SUN -------
                      GOLDEN (ANNIVERSARY?)
                      (SHANE?)

                      Some help would be great.

                        I'm guessing too.

                          Nice video. But...

ORANGE COUNTY IS NOT THE SAME AS LA!!! :verymad:

Ok. Now that I got that off my chest we can return to our regularly scheduled thread.

Yeah, that looks right. Makes more sense than "anniversary" (Disneyland didn't celebrate this until 2005) and also the same number of letters. Now to find the bottom line.

It bugs me that this is quite literally the only version of the video available it seems on the internet, and is quite low quality.

Yeah I've been searching image files to try and see if I can find a similar worded sign.

Wow, that marquee is definitely a blast from the past. And Open Wed/Sun certainly works for that time period. When I hired in as an Attractions CM in the early 80s, the park was closed on Monday and Tuesday during the off-season.
