  • [Chat] Phones in Disneyland

    It's not what you think.

Back before cell phones. Was there any payphones INSIDE the park?

Furthermore, for forty-years strong, people survived days at the park without a mobile phone. I doubt anyone carried around walkie talkies, so they just enjoyed themselves.

There were and I believe still are pay phones in the park.

Pay phones. Plus, who remembers the speakerphone booths outside CircleVision? It was before everyone had speakerphones and was a novelty to have 6 people talking to someone on the line.

I remember those! I used to go every year for the Telephone Pioneers party usually in November. My parents allowed me to take one friend & we spent time in those booths calling all our other friends!

I used to enjoy using the speakerphone booths. . . I also remember, back in the 70s, there also used to be a display where you could pick up a phone and hear messages from Disney characters. . .

I think the guide maps still point out where you can find payphones.

It's funny that you mentioned walkie talkies because that is exactly what my sisters and I used to use when we would go off in the park away from our parents! Hahaha the worst part though was that if someone with the walkie talkie was on the other side of the matterhorn you would lose connection!

AT&T had payphones all through the park, and a set with speaker phones (new in the times...)

And we did use walkie talkies... It was fun with all the cross over.

The are pay phones in the parks. What's really cool is they offer three free buttons: Guest Info, Disney Dinning reservations, and Disney Hotel reservations.

This was also the time before push-button phones were in most homes. I think the speaker-phone booths had push-button dialers, and there was an exhibit where you could dial the same number on a conventional dial phone and then a push-button phone; demonstrating how much faster the new technology was.

They were there in May, at least.

I think there are a set of phones still in the bottom part of Hungry Bear restaurant.

I can confirm a number of place that still have pay phones.
Near the Frontierland Entrance, near the Fantasyland/Tomorrowland transistion across from the Matterhorn. By the Main Street Lockers, at Hungry Bear.

Also near the Town Square restrooms on the Gallery side. By the Innovations restrooms. By the Village Hause restrooms.

I think they are near most restrooms but not all in DL.

In DCA I see them near restrooms as well.

They are on the park maps.

I notice them near the restrooms when I'm standing outside waiting for me neice. I don't think I've ever used them.

Funny that you should mention walkies as just the other day I saw a pair of girls walking by me at DCA with a walkie held between them! I was like "ahh that must be so much fun!"

Ha! I thought it was funny that they still have pay phones on my last trip! They do indeed have a row of them between the Matterhorn and Pixie Hollow. I know this because as we were walking out one night, I looked over and only 3 of the phones actually had the phone part left! What a souvenir that must have been to have a payphone from Disneyland lol.

come to think of it, the exit of space mountain, to the right of the restrooms, I think i "actually saw one being used" and thought... what are the odds these days?
