  • News Big Thunder Mountain Set to Close Down for a Lengthy Referbishment

    From Al's comment from today:

Disneyland's Big Thunder Mt. will be closing for a major rehab this fall, and remain closed through most of 2013. The 33-year-old coaster will receive a similar treatment as the one Space Mt. got in '03-'05, (without the extensive foundation work that Space Mt. needed). New track will be installed, the load/unload area will be widened for 21st century riders, and a new ride control system tops it all off. The queue will be prepped for NextGen additions, and unlike the recent WDW Thunder rehab Tony Baxter has returned to his first E Ticket to plus up the show and the aesthetics. Take your last ride on Big Thunder 1.0 in September. - Al Lutz

Sounds pretty good, though I would have rather seen the Matterhorn get this treatment.

I'm excited with everything announced except that they'll be adding a NextGen queue. I was beginning to think Disneyland had been spared . At least the Big Thunder Trail is going to be quite peaceful walk for the next few years isn't it?

Yeah. The paint job is nice and all that, but the track just sucks. BTMRR doesn't have the greatest track in the world either, but I'm kind of fond of the ride's jerkiness from a thematic perspective.

Good to hear, hopefully IJA gets the treatment next.
There is no right or wrong in this debate. It is simply a matter of perspective.

It is going down in September? Rats. Will be there in October for our anniversary with one of the grands - who loves this ride. It was closed when we were in WDW in January, too! Good thing we are patient! lol.

As usual..another ride that is some form has to be fixed up for the new body size standard in this country..even if its only the queue thats being widened..plus it helps for the mega crowded days too

Same here. It will be our first October trip. I'm pretty disappointed to hear that it will be closed this soon. BTMRR is one of my favorite rides in the park. It possibly has more nostalgic value to me than any other ride. I remember riding it and then running through the queue with my brother to hop on it again over and over on a slow night a few times. Looking forward to the improvements though. Just going to be tough seeing it closed for so long.

I didn't realize that larger riders presented issues in the load/unload area. :S

I'm a little sad that Big Thunder isn't going to be included at all in the Halloween festivities. Maybe if they can get all the effects to work for the future, they can have more technology to play with for future overlays.

Re: Big Thunder Mountain Set to Close Down for a Lengthy Referbishment

Wasn't Big Thunder down for like a 6 month rehab in the spring of 2011? The ride has never been, in my opinion, in that bad of shape. And as a big guy, I never found the loading/unloading area to be much of an issue.

I guess it's just sour grapes since the ride will be closed when I'm there in October. And with Matterhorn's new sleds, looks like 2 of my favorites are off the table this trip for me.

It does seem odd, to me at least, that Big Thunder has had so much rehab time in the last few years and a ride that really needs it like Indy just keeps going.

IIRC, Tony Baxter hinted that he was set to work on a major project before retiring. Is this what he was talking about?

During my last 2 visits to DLR, I noticed this ride going down a lot. A LOT. This is probably for the best, but I will miss it.

I think the unload area needs widened for guests with disabilities, so people can get off the ride easier and they can get on easier
