  • [Pictures] New Marina Tower Early 70's

In late 1969, the Disneyland Hotel opened it's third tower building.....yes that's right, third tower. The Sierra Tower is actually two tower buidlings attached together so the Marina Tower is the third such building. First tower opened in 1962, Tower annex in 1966 and Marina Tower in late 1969/early 1970. In many memos and notes I have on the Marina Tower project, it was conveyed that they (Wrather) wanted to really make a splash or statement on interior design with this tower as this new structure would house the Hotel's new lobby. Keep in mind, this is the late 60's/early 70's; a time of bright and vibrant colors, psychedelic design, flower-power.....well, you get it. I think based upon the pictures in this thread, you will get an idea on exactly what I mean.

Yup. But in fairness to the lobby's designers, the travel publicity photos of those days tended to oversaturate the colors 'way beyond what they really were, to make the brochure, newspaper insert, etc., jump out and catch the eye. The Marina lobby's color scheme was bold, but not overwhelmingly so -- it was certainly nothing like in those prints.

Drop the color saturation about 25-30% on your monitor -- especially the reds -- and you'll see something closer to what the lobby's colors actually were.

imagination or art. All you need is a brand."

I actually have color swatches too from the designer that were presented to the design team to consider for use. They are actually signed by the artist. I would scan them but they are huge. Maybe I will take a picture and post them.
