Discussion for the Editors Note we just posted to our front page about Radiator Springs Racers and Big Thunder Mountain:

We'd told you in previous MiceAge updates that the new "fall protection" standards that TDA is imposing on itself at Disneyland Resort would likely delay the long Big Thunder Mountain refurbishment, and now the word is officially out. Big Thunder Mountain will miss its original October re-opening date and is now slated to remain closed until February 15th, 2014 due to re-engineering access paths to meet TDA's new fall protection standards. Radiator Springs Racers is also slated for a refurbishment the third week of September, but that hasn't shown up on the public calendars yet. Folks heading to Anaheim the third week in September shouldn't plan on Racers being open, with a public admission from Disney on that planned for next week.

    Thanks, Dusty!

There are going to be some upset folks in regards to Racers being down, but things need to be taken care of.

Guess the CM wasn't joking about Thunder's new return date.

Glad to hear about this. Our passes expire at the beginning of October. We were planning some weekday trips over the next month. We'll make sure to hit RSR before it goes down.

Where is "the word" "officially out" about the RSR extended closure?

We were at DCA on Monday and Racers was down for an extended period of time. I told a cast member that Racers was the new Big Thunder, another ride that's down for at least an hour during 90% of my visits, and a cast member laughed and agreed.

Depending on how many days RSR is closed, some people will be justifiably upset.

This is Disney's newest E-ticket, an attraction people plan trips for just to experience it.

To have it closed just over a year after opening, and with little notice, may not go over well.

Of course, Disney may not have had a choice in this matter?

Thanks for the update Dusty. My question is, how do these "fall protection standards" slip through the cracks on new attractions? (i.e. RSR)

Personally, I think this is good news. Racers is just over a year old and has had repetitive effect failures (lots of complex elements) which impact the show. Hopefully they'll be able to replace and repair those issues so the ride is more reliable going forward.

The Big Thunder Mountain refurb extension is the one that I'm more worried about. It's been down for a very long time. Of course, there is some good news here as well. Lots of new interactive effects are being added to Big Thunder. The extended closure for safety/access issues will allow Imagineers more time to work on the new special effects and perfect them.

I'm starting to really miss this attraction!

I believe that the RSR closure is related to mechanical issues and not directly related to the safety issues in Disneyland.

We just wanted folks to know that two major attractions would be down so they can plan their vacations appropriately this Fall.

re: Radiator Springs Racers Screeching Halt

I understand having to shut attractions down for safety reasons, etc. it's just very discouraging when families have planned a trip down based on the available ride closure information found online and from Disney Travel. My husband and I booked a trip to come down Nov 15-18th, specifically because of BTMRR re-opening, and now it's been pushed back? A serious downer...

Is there any estimated time as to how long RSR will be closed?

That's what I was wondering. I'll be in the area the fourth week of September, so I'm hoping "third week" means just the third week.

A year's a long time to run without a rehab. I'm glad they're taking it down and giving it some TLC - would that they had the inclination and budget to do that to *every* ride annually.

So much confusion, with the date for BTMRR changing and returning to the end of October. I wish we had some official clarification. Combined that with SM down as well through January makes for a bummer of a holiday season at the park.

It's not. RSR is not facing an extended closure; Big Thunder Mountain is. Please re-read the post.
