  • [Question] What scared you at Disneyland as a child?

This is possibly more for the lifers out there - those of us who've been going long enough that we can remember back to the earlier trips.

What scared you as a child at the parks?

There's usually something - it's amazing how many truly early Disneyland memories really are a bit traumatic.

Mine's Adventures into Inner Space. I clearly recall my father jokingly telling me (around five year old me, natch) that the little figures in the queue rails were the people I saw going on the ride.

Fifteen minutes of sheer screaming meltdown later they gave up and wrote Inner Space off. Oddly enough I'd grow to love the ride over the next few years before it left.

So let's hear some stories! "OMG six foot rat?" "Why did my parents think a rollercoaster was a good intro at four?" "I just really hated churros"?

(snark settings to "stun" at highest please - this is a trip down Memory Lane, not a roll in Current Grievance Gutter)

When I was five, the red eyes and yeti roar in the dark on the Matterhorn was something I didn't like. I would always close my eyes from the top of the lift hill until the first cavern with the ice crystals.

It's always seemed the closest in spirit to the spookhouse origins of the ride system.

I was afraid to go on Space Mountain when I was a little kid. The yeti animatronic too I guess

Re: What scared you at Disneyland as a child?

As a tot, I did NOT want to ride in the 'lion cage' car on the Casey Junior Circus Train; I screamed bloody murder, and could not be consoled... I surmised that once we rounded the corner, the lion would (somehow) enter the cage and I would be trapped inside; a 4-year old's "logical conclusion"...

As a pre-teen, I remember that the ride up the elevator to the Rocket Jets would get the butterflies going - and the actual ride WAY UP HIGH above Tomorrowland was quite terrrifying / exhilerating; I remember estimating the trajectory of my rocket out onto Harbor Blvd should the armature break... No such thrill on the "Astro Orbiter"

Throughout my childhood, the scariest thing at Disneyland was my father; trying to calculate when the ticket prices + snacks + drinks + mouse ears + actual meals would finally take their toll and he would have to lose his temper and have a total tantrum / meltdown...

This was before we knew about giving (our parents) "time-outs"
"I've got the heart of a child..." - I keep it in a box, next to my bed...

I hated HATED any water ride with drops when I was child. I loved roller coasters, but I couldn't handle drops on water rides. Pretty weird lol. But now I love all of them!

Haunted Mansion, I always felt safer if I was next to my dad on it for some reason. My mom doesn't hold any grudges. Adventures Through Inner Space always tripped me out as a youngster as well, I always thought you really shrank, until my friends older brother pointed out to me the same model/miniature couple that looped through the scenario. I felt relieved, but also bummed out at the same time.

The entire Haunted Mansion. I remember it being cold in the door chamber and I especially really remember the coffin with the ghost trying to "get out". I was also scared of Space Mountain. What a weenie I was when I was 3.

Both Snow White's Scary Adventures and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride scared me so badly when I was a small child (around 3 or 4 I reckon) that I didn't revisit them until I was 13.

I hated the Haunted Mansion. I was terrified of the bride and the sound of the beating heart. My family would almost always save this ride as the last thing we would ride at the end of the night. I usually couldn't sleep after a DL visit.

LOL I couldn't stand the coasters either. I was a teenager before I rode them willingly!
