  • [Question] Visiting disneyland the week of Christmas. Bad idea?

My friends and I are planning to visit Disneyland on Monday the 23 of December. Is this a bad idea? Will it be extremely packed? Any tips would be much appreciated guys!

Yes. It will be busy. VERY busy.

Be prepared for long lines and not necessarily getting a whole lot done in the day. If you plan on any of the shows, be prepared to show up early to secure a place. You may want to consider whether any of your group is going to need longer breaks during the day to get away from the crowds (kids, introverts, etc.) and plan accordingly.

Go with the plan to just roll with the day and appreciate the marvels of crowd science and you should be ok

I'll give a mixed answer. I love Disney around Christmas. It is beautiful. All of the Christmas lights and decorations. The characters are in their "winter outfits." It is very magical at this time of year.

However, there seems to be a billion other people who love Disney at Christmas too. And most of them will be there the same day you go. (No matter what day you go).

        It will be very crowded.

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot a tip. Get there as early as you can. It will only get more crowded the later in the day and into the night.

Going to Disneyland during Christmas Time is always a great idea.

Going the week OF, however...:yuck: Just avoid it.

Hundreds of thousands of other people seem to think its a good idea so why not?

Just don't expect Disney's -A- game......many of their most senior employees take this time of the year off; leaving mere lambs to face the hoards

The week between Christmas and New Year's is also VERY crowded.

I think there's an energy in a packed park that's interesting to experience (OMDD, New Year's) but those aren't the best ride or show days. If you're coming from a distance and this is your only Disneyland visit for some time then it may not be as satisfying as if you are a frequent visitor. If you're intending to do rides and/or shows then you really need to be there before the gates open and strategize-strategize-strategize. If you're just showing up for the ambience then at least try to get there before late afternoon, which will avoid the worst of the traffic/parking/main gate snarls.

We tried once during Christmas week, never again. We`ve never seen it so crowded. 90 minutes to get on Indy. All rides were long waits. You waste your whole time there waiting in lines. The food lines were incredibly big, took half an hour to reach the counter at 10:30am to get breakfast. We wanted to see Aladden around 4pm, I never saw a line that big before. It stretched all the way to the Muppets. My tip would be to go the monday after the Thanksgiving weekend. No crowds and you get all the holiday decorations

To be honest, yes, I do think it is a bad idea, especially if you're claustrophobic and/or impatient with lines.

I went day after Christmas last year - And I went with the expectation of HUGE crowds, which of course there was.

If you go in with the expectation of getting on lots of rides, and seeing what there is "Christmas" wise ... you will be let down.

If you go with the expectation of just checking out what Christmas offerings there are .. and rides are secondary (those of which don't have Christmas overlays) ... then you'll enjoy your day.

Set the day up so you see:
                            - Nightmare Before Christmas Haunted Mansion (after sundown)
                            - Small World Holiday (after sundown)
                            - Jingle Cruise
                            - Christmas parade
                            - if the Fantasyland Theatre has a Christmas show - make the plan for it
                            - Holiday fireworks show (be in the hub for that)

And if you have anytime beyond that ... check out Buena Vista Street and Carsland decorations ... it's pretty nice .. over in DCA.

So my suggestion ... Don't make general rides a priority. Make all the Christmas stuff your priority.

                            Couldn't agree more!

If one wants to see the park at this time of year - One has to set their expectations for big crowds, and long lines.

If you don't - Then the next time Tomorrowland is remodeled, you will see a land barren of any "Peoplemover" type attraction.

I went during Spring Break last March and it was extremely packed, not sure how it compares to christmas though. However I found that if you are on top of things, if you get there extremely early, at least an hour before they open and use Fast Pass to its full potential which requires a decent amount of walking. It shouldn't be too bad. We would get in about 9 rides early before it started getting badly crowded. Then would have 3 or so during the peak crowd this is when we just floated and used FP lines from FP's acquired earlier, and after dinner could get 7 to 8 before midnight.
