  • [Question] Where do the Disney cats live?

So, we just got home from another fantastic trip to Disneyland. We always stay at the Howard Johnson, but this trip, I decided to splurge and stay two nights at the Disneyland Hotel (then the rest of the nights at HoJo).

Anyways... while staying at the Disneyland Hotel, I took a suitcase full of clothes down to the hotel laundromat, at 5:00 in the morning. I am typically an early riser, and decided to get the laundry done, before the crowds woke up.

The Disneyland Hotel has the laundromat located near the exercise facility, which is in its own small building. It's off to the side and a bit out of the way. While on the way to the laundromat, I enjoyed the smell of the early morning grass and the peacefulness of the moment. The only person I encountered on the way to the laundromat was a hotel employee, who greeted me with a friendly "good morning"... and then as I approached the laundromat, I was greeted by a pack of cats! There was easily 6 to 8 of them. Most of them were just laying in the morning sun, on the sidewalk. As I approached, they all scattered, and disappeared into the shrubs.

This got me thinking... "where do all the Disney cats actually live?"

I know the parks also have cats, which help keep the rodents away. I've even heard that they have feeding stations set-up for them (like in the abandoned Skyway Station in Fantasyland).

Do the Hotels and the Parks actually have shelters for the cats? Or are they left to their own devices?

Are they actually fed on a daily basis? Or do they survive on mice and garbage?

Are they vaccinated? Or are they potentially carrying diseases?

Anybody have any 'official information' on the cats...?

I've kind of wondered the same. And how do they contain said "cats" in the Disneyland area? Do they know to come back?

They are all feral cats, so they basically just live on and around the property. They're pretty self-sufficient. Like you mentioned, there are 5 main feeding stations, like the Skyway, that provide dry food for them. They are all placed in areas to minimize contact with Cast Members and guests.

A few years ago Disney staff also started treating them (trap-neuter-return, wellness check, etc) as well.

The cats are free to come and go as they please. They naturally hide during park hours and other then the one spot that most people know about at the Hungry Bear, most of them live backstage. I didn't know that they ever spread out as far as the hotel. After the park is closed sometimes you'll see a few of them emerge and walk through the park. I never came accross one that would come up to me even if I had food in my hand so apparently they are very wary of people.

Behind Nemo and in the middle of Autopia there is a little shelter built with water and food dishes laid out for the cats. I saw it when I worked there.

What I remember seeing of them, they live mainly on the berms or other places that have lots of plants and no trails. There are lots of "woodsy" areas that the cats can live in in the park. The hills and planters that separate onstage from offstage or divide the lands are areas the cats hang out during the day.

I used to see them when the park was closed.

I heard one left, but then the cat came back -- The very next day. Some thought he was a goner but the cat came back, he just couldn't stay away.

I wonder if the Disney gardeners would have any stories about what area's the cat's use for a litter box. inch:

I keep wondering if I need to suggest a clean up

Here's a link to a Micechat thread with many photos of cats at Disneyland:

The feeding stations double as cages. They set them up and wait for the cats to get comfortable, and then one night *bam* it trap the cat. They can then get the cat spayed, it's shots, and chipped for tracking. They then release the cat and it goes back to it's life of sleeping during the day.
