  • An upgrade for Harold?

I wonder, with the success of Expedition Everest at DAK, if the brain trust in Burbank is thinking of possibly updating Harold in the Matterhorn to match his cousin in Florida?

I personally like Harold the way he is but they could maybe give him better movement.

I don't want him to look anything like the Yeti from Expedition Everest. But if he was changed out for an identical-looking Animatronic but with better movement, I'd be thrilled.

Honestly, I LOVE MAtterhorn, especially since its one of those rides that growing up near WDW I only ever heard about and finally got to know and love when I moved to LA. But I think it's nearing time for a full redo. Don't blast me, I am not talking a reconceptualization with loops and stuff, just a Space Mountain-like rebuild to make it fast, smooth and way cool (updated effects) That would include a new Harold I think.

I think Harold is good the way he is. He's not there to really scare, just a little surprise, extra dimension to the Matterhorn, I guess. I think he does his job well, even if there isn't a lot of movement.

Man, I'd LOVE for Matterhorn to get a SM-like upgrade but it seems like they'd have to take the whole thing out to do something like that. Space Mountain was just a ride in a building but in the Matterhorn's case the ride is the building.

Let AK have its "knock-off" (I don't dislike E:E, but feel that the Yeti isn't a new idea) we have the inspirational original. And plus the Fantasyland-Tomorrowland line is very iffy. You go from "Agrifuture that Never Was" to "Finding Nemo" to Swiss Alps to European Fairy Tales. Adding the "Legend of Yeti/Nepalese Himalayas/Serka Zong" would only add more confusion.

              Let's keep Harold.

However like many old Audio-Animatronics, it wouldn't hurt for him to recieve some oil on the joints, have his fingers curl as he lunges forward. If they introduce new Bobsleds, I think it would be cool if they had little speakers in the car that have heavy breathing so you think he is behind you, and in the lift have snow falling projections with cold air blasts.

Well, I thought arms moved at least...or maybe it is my imagination as the ride goes fairly fast.

Yeah, his arms move. I like the way he is right now though, the motion and everything seems fine to me.

Although i enjoy the matterhorn i wish something was done to make it a bit smoother.

It would be interesting to see if the track system could be either replaced or changed to a diferent track system that wouldn't be so bumpy.

Does anyone have pics of the Matterhorn when it was hollow inside?

I think that the ride is long overdue for a serious overhaul. Yes, it was state of the art in 1959, but unless I'm very much mistaken, it's been running on the same ride system for nearly 50 years! Personally, I would love to see the Matterhorn go down for a major refurb soon, and reopen in the spring of 2007. But I'm a nerd like that.

I've been to DLR only twice (will be back in April though!!) but the first time Matterhorn was down for refurbishment. The second time (just a couple of years ago) I FINALLY got to ride it - we went on it like 6 or 7 times - I loved it. That first growl in the dark scared the hell out of me.

I would take matterhorn, and clean things up... remove all that dust from his coat.. lol (it's easier to make him brown and sell the same stuff at both parks..)
