  • A few Questions / Thoughts

I'm a new poster here, but I've been keeping up and reading the fourms for awhile. And I have some thoughts to share.

    1. Okay, as you might tell from my username, I thought the Motor Boat Cruise was cool. I've never ridden it, but based on photos, I can see that it seemed like my kind of ride. I just read (after the STUPID fake Casino thing) on Al Lutz's update that the Cruise area is walled off? What for?

    2. They are painting the Peoplemover tracks, but does that mean the original ride is returning? I liked Peoplemover, but it could've been a little faster. It was almost too slow. It went about 5mph. WDW's goes 10mph, and it's much more breezy, and you can still appreciate the views. I also enjoyed Rocket Rods, though they seemed like they WOULD NOT be in the future because they were so loud! If the Peoplemover could be quiet, it's a better future proposition than Rods.

    3. The Nemo subs ride is a cute concept, and it'd be great--if this was FANTASYLAND. But it has *no place* in Tomorrowland. Ugh. I hate cartoons taking over.

    4. As I just said, I hate cartoons taking over. I know Superstar Limo at DCA was the biggest flop, and it's been empty since like Jan 2002, but Monsters Inc is a bad idea. The popularity of that (unless there's another movie which I doubt) is liable to be very low after a few years.

So any comments on these thoughts?

      Welcome to the boards!

      1. I'm not sure why the cruise area will be walled off. Some people speculate it is for the subs, but nobody seems really sure.

      2. Again, nobody seems to know about the people mover, but rumor has it something will be coming back relatively soon. I can't remember ever being on the peoplemover, nor did I try the Rods, so I can't really say what I prefer. But I think that something futuristic zooming along the tracks at a somewhat quicker pace would really help. It would just add excitement to the land.

      3. I agree Nemo doesn't really belong in TL. Maybe they can make the entrance in Fantasyland and call it a FL ride.

      4. I think that DCA really needs a family friendly dark ride, which is what Monsters Inc. seems to be. While it is not ideal, I'm hoping that the ride will still be great, and be another RIDE, which DCA needs. I'm not too worried about it.

Well I think everyone is speculating what is going to happen with the Motor boat cruise area right now.
I think most people would like to see the peoplemover return, and it wouldn't hurt it to go a little faster, I agree.
And I think most people also agree about Nemo, but we are happy just to see the Lagoon come back to life. Let's hope the future will bring new exciting things back to Tomorrowland.
Again, many of us are also distressed about cartoon Disneyland, and maybe with those out of the way, there will be budget room and imagineers on the payroll ready to wow us with the first new E-ticket since Indy...
Goin around the world...and back to Disneyland!

And if Autopia gets the "Cars" overlay I will seriously scream. Then like all of TL will be cartoons.

"cars" looks like a stupid movie anyway.

If you thought the Peoplemover was slow, then it's obvious you never rode the Motor Boat Cruise. That was not only extremely slow (the pace was leisurely), but the boat engines were as loud as the Autopia cars'. The Peoplemover's speeds were just fine, and varied between 5 mph and 10 mph. It was never designed to be a speed demon's favorite. I get sick and tired of hearing everybody and his grandmother yap about how every land needs another E-ticket (when we haven't even had ticket books in 20 years; no ticket books, no E-tickets), and how everything needs to be sped up to roller coaster speeds.

This notion that Disneyland competes with other amusement parks is laughable. Disneyland competes with no one. There's Disneyland, and then there's everyone else.

As to what's being planned for the Submarine Lagoon and Motor Boat Cruise area, you know as much as I do. I also am not fond of a Finding Nemo idea, for a variety of reasons. I too loathe the toonification of the rest of the Park. But consider who's running the company.
My fondest memory of Walt Disney was the day Disneyland opened....I was standing next to him - I was 12 years old - he was looking at the gate where people were coming through, he had his hands behind his back, he had a grin from ear to ear, but you could see the lump in his throat and the tear coming down his cheek because his dream had been realized. -- Mouseketeer Sharon Baird, "Mouseke-Memories", Walt Disney Treasures: The Mickey Mouse Club

I dont think Peoplemover should be a SPEED DEMON, but it could at least not be so slow. It bordered on ridiculously slow.

No, I never rode the Motorboats, as I said. I simply think they seem simple enough to keep operating. What was the reason for their closure, anyway? And when did they close?

They may be planning something seperate there, but I doubt it. They could be just trying to refurbish the area, its been empty for a while. Perhaps there will be some tie-in with the submarines project, who knows.

Oh, and I though the casino thing was funny. To each there own.

Well, It certainly seems possible that they could bring back the Peoplemovers, which I would love, but it doesn't seem likely. The rides didn't have a very good capacity due to their slow movement and loading. They were also often plagued by technical problems. even bringing back the Peoplemovers would probably take some major refurbishment of the trach, as well as the construction of new vehicals.

The Rocket Rods were a mistake from the beginning. A tight budget was what caused the ride to be built in the first place, and it was also plauged by technical problems. Its biggest problem was the incredibly long line (I once waited 2 hours) and incredibly short ride (approximately 2 minutes).

As for the destiny of the track, perhaps Matt Ouimet will bring back the peoplemovers, but I doubt it. The paint was needed however, due to the tracks disintergrating status and old paint scheme.

True true. This is where we often get into arguments about tommorowland. We say that its about the future, not the present. The submarines and Autopia didn't feature futuristic vehicals, but allowed guests to experience things they wouldn't be able to experience otherwise. As for the Nemo theme, I would love to have just the submarines return, I agree that Nemo doesn't belong in Tommorowland, but this isn;t anything new. There are many cartoon-themed attractions within Innoventions, which dont necissarily have anything to do with the future. Maybe the ride will be cool. Who knows. C'est la vie.

Well, I wouldn't doubt another MI movie, not with Pixaren't arount. However, this park has already been exposed to cartoon themes which don't fit; A Bug's Land. After all, while I get that Disney was trying to put something in for little kids, the "A Bugs Life" theme has NOTHING to do with the "California Theme". Again, C'est la vie.

Ah, yes... well that is the big mystery isn't it?

It would be nice if it returned with a mag-lev propultion system rather than the old tire system... it would solve most of the problems stated on this board of having to replace both Rocket Rods and PeopleMover...

I am surprised no one else has pointed it out... the trick is to make it not travel too fast... Mag-lev can rocket you out faster than sound if you do it right... but keeping it to 10-15 mph is about right... Faster you travel the less likely people would be stupid...

                  3. The Nemo subs ride is a cute concept, and it'd be great--if this was FANTASYLAND. But it has *no place* in Tomorrowland. Ugh. I hate cartoons taking over.
I don't mind if it is a "wink" to nemo and they keep some of the theme of TL... It depends on the storyline...

                  4. As I just said, I hate cartoons taking over. I know Superstar Limo at DCA was the biggest flop, and it's been empty since like Jan 2002, but Monsters Inc is a bad idea. Again, I don't know the storyline... not that I care... It doesn't matter what they put in to Hollywood Pictures Backlot... because... A. nothing there has anything to do with the Disney owned Hollywood Pictures Studio... B. the adult humor (Phillup A Couch, Casting Agency sign in big neon letters) across children's based attractions (Playhouse Live and Animation) are appalling!!! Particularly if you are gravitating toward building more family oriented attractions in the area... C. There are no motion pictures/television shows produced there - I think they should film a TV show where Millionare is and make it realism...

                    RE: Monsters Inc. Overlay:
You're correct -- Monster's Inc. is not going to be viewed as one of 'the classics' in the future. Then again, how many of us re-watch the Icabod Crane/Mr. Toad video with any regularity (Okay, I'm sure some of you do...)? Still, no one can claim Toad's Wild Ride is not a great ride.
No one except the Florida execs!

We pull the DVD off the shelf every Halloween, and that's about it!

Don't know... mostly likely related to the Nemo overlay. My guess is that it's the
Disabled/Special access version of the ride since the subs were before American
Disabilty Act and has limited wheelchair access and there's no room to build anything like that at the current queue.

                        2. They are painting the Peoplemover tracks, but does that mean the original ride is returning? I liked Peoplemover, but it could've been a little faster. Well, I don't really care about the speed either way, but if the rumors that I've
heard about the damage to the tracks by Rocket Rods is true, then I would doubt it.
Now if they are repairing tracks and getting
rid of the plants that have overgrown it, then there could be something behind
                        that rumor!

Actually, the Nemo overlay doesn't make sense for Fantasyland either. (It's
not Tomorrow or Fantasy)... Maybe DCA if I had the millions to plop a ride
                        anywhere. :-)

                        4. As I just said, I hate cartoons taking over. I know Superstar Limo at DCA was the biggest flop, and it's been empty since like Jan 2002, but Monsters Inc is a bad idea. The popularity of that (unless there's another movie which I doubt) is liable to be very low after a few years.
Well, personally, I don't mind toons. But do prefer something direct to the theme
of the "land". BTW. knowing how Disney has done things (with sequels), I
would be very surprised if Disney *doesn't* do another movie direct to video
on Monsters Inc. The only exception is if they sign that right away to Pixar.
I've heard rumors that they're already working on the script to Toy Story 3 w/o Pixar.

                          1. According to Al their walling off both the motor boat cruise and submarine voyage soon to make way for future project(s). Related to Finding Nemo sub overlay obviously.

                          2. No one knows whats going on with the Peoplemover track. Although their are some rumors coming from reliable sources that they are working on something. Peoplemover was much better than rocket rods by the way.

                          3. I agree with you although right now i'll take anythign i can get. We can worry about retheming the ride once its brought back.

                          4. Monsters Inc. dark ride > empty building > Superstar Limo. Good decision on Disneys part imo.

im just glad they're putting a ride in the lagoon. i mean disneyland is a theme park in its own league, so why should there be vacant rides?
