  • Great Hotels & Beaches Near DLR?

Hi, in two weeks I'll be at DLR for my birthday. I am spending two nights at the Hyatt Garden Grove and I wanted to add a night at the beach. After doing some searching here, it looks like Huntington and Laguna were highly recommended. My questions are:

    1. How long does it take to drive from DLR? We have our car, but I'm not sure how long it will take during the week.

    2. Any suggestions for nice hotels close to the water? The water will be too cold to get in, but I would like to soak in the atmosphere, shop, dine, etc.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, and I will buy you a churro if I see you at DLR. How can you beat that deal?

Thanks so much for your expert advice!!!

    MF

P.S. If I may say, coming from Phoenix, AZ you guys are SO lucky to have the ocean, beaches and all that cool stuff. I am super jealous. On the bright side, in 1,000,000 years L.A. will fall off, and we will have beach front property.

I like Laguna Beach best (but I'm biased as we used to have a time-share there) It's great for soaking up the ambiance. The town is awesome, with great little restaurants, and shops, etc. perfect ambiance! The laguna brisas (I think that's what it's called) and the sand and surf are both awesome hotels, but you definitely pay for the awesomeness. Coming from Vegas my thought is, who cares what the hotel is like, you're AT THE BEACH!!!!! it's about a 30 minute drive average....
(Just a thought, you could rent a beach house....about the same price as a hotel room sometimes..... try vrbo.com)
Good luck! Have a happy birthday!

Thanks so much, I will take a look at the site. I agree with you, I am there to see the ocean and soak up the atmosphere, so I don't need a fancy place to stay, just somewhere close to the water so I can walk around and take it all in.

Surf and Sand. I think their website is www.surfandsandresort.com

They are right on the water, and it's walking distance to all the shops and things.

              Very expensive.

If you are willing to go to a farther beach, for a little cheaper rate

Hermosa beach has "The Beach House" It's right on the beach, and their rates could be a little less than Laguna's.

              http://www.beach-house.com/hermosa-beach-hotels.html

Those are the two, that I know of, that are actually right there, on the sand, with shops and atmosphere close at hand.

I think the beaches between Newport and Huntington are closed due to a sewage problem.:yuck:

Laguna is beautiful and shouldn't be affected.

The beaches might open up Monday afternoon(5/1) at the earliest, that's if it's safe enough.

I heard about this too. Eventhough I would vote for Huntington, you might want to go to Laguna or Newport instead!

Umm... I live in Redondo Beach...

I think the way to go is Hermosa Pier... From Disneyland it is almost a STRAIGHT shot on the 91. Just drive up on the 5, go west on the 91, it turns into Artesia, and then, drive a tad south on PCH to Peir Ave. There are tons of resturants, there is a great trail that goes along the beach, lots of people watching...

                      Very easy to get to!

Thanks so everyone for the info. Do you guys know how I would check and see which beaches are open? I will try to Google it, but I didn't know if there was a better source. I am not trying to get in the water, but it would be nice to not be by raw sewage.

                        Thanks!!!

Re: Great Hotels & Beaches Near DLR?

Laguna and Huntington Beach are both great locations, although they are very different. Laguna is up on cliffs, which makes for more dramatic vistas overlooking the ocean, but there are only 3-4 places to really walk on the sand and experience the beach in Laguna proper. Laguna is a much richer town, and has the art galleries, fancy restaurants, and prices to match.

Huntington Beach, on the other hand, is a much more casual place, where 20 somethings go for a beer after a day of surfing. Huntington is all flat, huge sandy beaches with plenty of places to lie down or walk all day. There are a couple of upscale restaurants, but nothing nearly like Laguna.

I have to agree with the Hyatt Huntington Beach recommendation. It's a newer, but really great, hotel, that is absolutely close to everything.

Laguna is at the end of a canyon, so traffic during the summer is a bear, since there is only three roads in the entire city in or out of town (Laguna Canyon Road, or PCH N or S), and a lot of art and playhouse festivals during the summer.

Laguna is also farther from the Disneyland Resort than Huntington Beach.

The top five rated (by actual travelers) hotels in Laguna Beach are as follows:
                          1. Casa Laguna Inn
                          2. Montage Resort and Spa Laguna Beach
                          3. Laguna Riviera Beach Resort
                          4. Aliso Creek Inn
                          5. Holiday Inn Laguna Beach
The top five hotels in Huntington Beach are as follows:
                          1. Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa
                          2. Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort
                          3. Best Western Regency Inn
                          4. Hotel Huntington Beach
                          5. Best Western Huntington Beach Inn
                          Have a great trip!

the raw sewage did not hit Laguna Beach. the beach was open. Newport and Laguna Beach have about 10 mile land and sea beween them. There also a point of land that stop any stuff from coming from Newport Beach.
