  • Did Dumbo ears ever flap?!

I stumbeled accross this picture, and if you look closely at how the ear connects to the head it looks as if the ears were designed to flap up on down -- as if on a hinge.

Can anyone confirm this?? I would guess this is late 50's..

I wasn't even alive back then, but I do agree with you that it looks like they would flap.

In 30 some odd years, I have never seen them flap.

Passage from The Nickel Tour, and I quote:

"...If you look closely at [postcard pictured above], you'll notice that the elephants themselves have been altered since the photo was taken. No, it's not what you're thinking, they altered the ears! Those big ears were supposed to flap up and down as they flew, but the ears were too weak, so they never did."

ryborg, your observation is quite correct, however it was an effect that never seemed to work. Oh well- I guess if you can accept that a fiberglass elephant can fly, you will also accept the fact that its ears are not flapping.

Also, don't go looking for the hinges because obviously the idea was ditched early on and Dumbo has been replaced at least once since then.

Yeah I know the entire ride was rebuilt some time later... would be cool if the ears flapped though.

Ah, that was a quick answer!! Thanks, 2DieFR! I never knew that little factoid about the Dumbos. I think the effect, at least the original way it was designed, would probably have looked a bit clunky.. but it's a cool idea nonetheless.

I may be completely off on this but didn't Disneyland receive the Dumbo ride that was made for Disneyland Paris later on? So the original Dumbo ride that was in Disneyland is now gone?

Yes! Ours broke right before Paris opened so we now have the Paris Dumbo. Atleast that is what I have heard many times before.

                    See the bottom of http://www.mouseplanet.com/guide.php?pg=AAC103

The 1983 version apparently had only 10 elephants, whereas the 1990 (Paris) version has 16.

I know the fountain was added in 1983, when the ride was moved to its current location. I wonder whether the ride mechanism and elephants were replaced in 1983, or whether the 1955 one was simply moved and had the fountain added to make it look new. If it was new in 1983, then it sure didn't last long!

I remember riding the original when I was around 4 or 5 years old .. must have been around 1982, just before Fantasyland closed for renovation. I also remember riding the first fountain version in 1984. I don't think I've been on it since then ... the Rocket Jets always had a much shorter line, and it was fun to be way up there above the PeopleMover and more recently I haven't been all that interested in that type of ride.

I don't know if I'm making this up but:

Didn't the current dumbo ride have the mouse (i think his name is Tim) hold a whip, then a feather, then before the 50th, he now holds a whip again??

it looks like the elephant trunk was designed to hold a feather....
