  • Disneyland Splash Mountain construction photos, part 3

After a long delay, I've scanned and uploaded part 3 of my SM construction photos. A different scanner this time, things are a little brighter but there are some annoying scan lines in some pictures. I will probably try to rescan those at some point, but for now, they're ok.

These photos cover steel work on the big and small bridges, installation of the main drop, first and second lifts, Old Mill Pond and flume construction and finally, addition of the mountain top meshing.

Hope you like them. Part 4 in a few days and hopefully with a better scanner.

That's pretty cool...they really seemed to have different construction schedules for the this Splash & the one in WDW...I have a topping off photo of WDW's and the mountain seems to be so much farther along.

Wow... amazing photos, again! Some of these shots would be almost identical to the ones I would have taken had I actually brought my camera to the park during that time. Thanks again for your dedication to Splash's history.

Thanks for the pictures, they truly are a rare thing considering that few people really thought to track and catalog developments at Disneyland during that time.

It's very interesting to see what it looked like in 1988. It really reminds me of the Submarine Lagoon today. I mean, back then it was just a series of seemingly random beams of steel and cement, totally lacking any shape or pattern. Right now we have a big box with some steel beams in the sub lagoon and it's very exciting knowing that something as big and wonderful as Splash Mountain looked the same way at one point.

I realize everything has to start somewhere, but I think it's very reassuring that the Nemo Subs look like a smaller version of Splash Mountain's construction so far.

Thanks for the pictures. It's interesting to see the flume and how the process came about to make this part of the ride.

Splash Mountain was truly an amazing construction project. It's by far the most complicated ride at Disneyland. Think about this: it's a fast water ride, with wet and dry drops, 3 lifts, two buildings, the back building has two levels, it goes under the train tunnel twice and over it FOUR times (though 2 of those are just the loop around the bear cave), it goes under two bridges and back, it has a huge final room with the train going straight through it and the queue goes right through the heart of the main building. And during construction, they opened and closed Bear Country 2 or 3 times (I should know, but can't remember). On top of that, it had great photo ops: TSI, Mark Twain, the train and from Bear Country itself.

I think that's why it is so intriguing to me and why I went all out on the photos.

I wish there were POTC construction photos. I think that's the second most complicated ride at DLR: two buildings, under the train twice, a built in restaurant, drops, perfectly themed. ANYONE out there have POTC construction photos??!!

Submarine Lagoon is also very integrated, with a "back" building, the Monorail, PM and Autopia all going over it and now extra buildings in the middle.

Those are some amazing photos. It's interesting to see what the lifts and drops look like without all of the theming.
                        Woof!
