Back in 1984, several workers' unions voted to go on strike rather than accept the contracts Disneyland management was offering. Among others, attractions cast members walked out, and the attractions were manned by cast members crossing picket lines, supervisors, and other salaried people from other Disney divisions, including WDI (WED at that time.) It went on for several months, right through the ouster of Ron Miller and the coronation of Eisner, until it was settled and people returned to their former jobs. It was a passionate, emotional time, and the wounds ran pretty deep for a while. Back then, Disneyland was full of "Lifers," who worked attractions as a career. They felt their very livelyhoods were being threatened. Others felt that that the Disneyland cast members, who had persevered through two extraordinary attempts by corporate raiders to take control of Disney, were being unfairly singled out and being asked to pay for the Company's dismal financial performance in the twenty years following Walt's death, when Disneyland was one of the few money-making divisions the company had.
If it happened again, and Cast members walked because they felt that they had to, what would your reaction be? Would you support them? Would you visit the parks? Do you think such a thing might happen again, or are things too different now? What do you think?
(PS this probably will never happen in Orlando, because Florida is a right-to-work state and unions, although represented at WDW, have very little clout, and membership is voluntary.)
