  • The Blue Bayou is back... ...but

Well gang I was phoned this afternoon and told I was invited to go have a sneak peek Dinner at the newly refurbished Blue Bayou Restaurant at the Disneyland Resort. After fighting rush hour traffic Dustysage and I raced to New Orleans Square and were 10 minutes late.

I was very excited to see the new, upgraded menu and curious how the pricing had changed. My tastebuds tingled as I caught the first whiffs of the familiar smell of the strangely appealing "Pirates air" mingled with the smell of food. Certainly this would be a meal to remember with Ouimets claims that this would be the finest restaurant in any Disney park.

Because we had Crazylegs (wheelchair) with us we were escorted up the exit tunnel of Pirates to enter the main dining area. This afforded us a sneak peak at the load/unload dock still under refurb.

We were seated and handed our souvenier menus. Souvenier menus from a Fine dining establishment? Okay... The menu isn't so much improved as it is streamilined. There are fewer options than before. You are given the choice of two appetizers, Crab cakes or Jumbo Shrimp Remoulade. Upon arrival the waiter informed us the kitchen was out of crab cakes. No problem. We ordered our drinks and the waiter, promptly left to get them.

    Dustysage and Bill

Looking over the Entrees we were offered 10 options:

    Short Ribs 26.99
    Seafood Jumbalya 25.99
    Alaskan King Crab Legs 34.99
Five pepper Roasted Prime rib of Beef 29.99
    Filet Mignon 33.99
    Port Royal Mahi Mahi 27.99
    Tesora Island Chicken 24.99
Portebello Mushroom and Couscous Maque Choux 24.99
Molasses Brined Bayou Pork Chop 25.99
    Cajun Spiced Salmon 26.99

    DLRP_BOPAZOT

All Entress were offered with a choice of Cajun inspired wedge salad or New orleans gumbo and two of the following: Blue Bayou potatoes, seasonal veggies, or spinach.

The waiter came and informed us that they were out of the Mahi Mahi and the Filet Mignon. I chose The Molasses Brined Pork Chop and was not given the option to choose my sides. When asked, I chose the Cajun inspired wedge salad as my starter.

After consuming two of the rolls offered when we sat down our "Salad" arrived.

It seemed as if the salad consisted of leftovers from the condiment bar over at Taste Pilots Grill.

The salad was a slice of tomato, bits of sausage, an avacado wedge, a colorless wedge of iceberg lettuce and a flavorless dressing.

    TERRIBLE

The entrees arrived and the meal took a turn for the better.

The pork was very very tasty and as opposed to the portion that Crazylegs received, mine was a very lean cut. The dish came with white asparagus and Bayou potatoes (See escalloped). The meal was small in size but big on flavor.

This is a very compressed review, but I will say this. The Blue Bayou looks WONDERFUL and sounds just as good. The menu leaves a bit to be desired. The prices are a bit higher and the portions have been scaled down. This plays into the whole notion of being a higher end, fine dining, restaurant conveniently, but I am not sure it will play well with American audiences.

Overall, it's nice to have the bayou back though there are still some kinks to be worked out.

Oh, and DON'T ORDER THE SALAD!!!

      Thanks for the review.

Luckily I had already eaten at White Water before being invited into the Bayou for a soft opening yesterday. I would have been totally irked to pay $30 for a dinner plate with a skimpy portion, no matter how delicious.

Oh well, hopefully Cafe Orleans ends up delivering better food with decent portions for the prices.

I may sound like a fat American, but I want to get full if I'm paying top dollar for a meal. I don't want a buffet-sized meal, but I want to be full

WoW great pics! I'll be there Sunday, not sure if I'll be at the Blue Bayou but I'll be at the park. Does the ride look any different at all from where you were at?

I am an admittedly "fat American"...I post my own pictures here so I can't hide from them. I've never quite grasped the prices that "fine dining" restaurants charge for portions of that size, and even smaller...but most American restaurants give us portions that should last for 2-3 meals, so....

In any case, if the Blue Bayou is your thing, enjoy enjoy enjoy! To each their own....

            Thanks for the review!

Hmm...by the sounds of it I'm not going to visit except on really special occasions. Though I might try to pop in at times for dessert hehe.

Those portions would fill me up, but the mouskameals fill me up so that's not saying much. I'm rather upset that you can't get clam chowder anymore since I used to just order that then dunk some rolls in it. Oh, and thanks for the pictures, fishbulb!

Maybe it's due to the whole "soft opening" thing...perhaps they planned for a smaller number of people or their deliveries didn't arrive? In any case, you would assume they would give you a price break if they are out of half of the items on the menu, and that was one PATHETIC looking salad.

Who let that thing go out of the kitchen?

Matt won't be too happy about this....

Question...since I obviously don't spend much time in "fine dining" establishments...do most "fine dining" establishments serve up ICEBERG lettuce...you know, flavorless with absolutely no nutritional value? Even I know that much...

The salad is made from half of a baby lettuce. It looks small when presented (I felt like this might be an issue), but once the head of lettuce is cut up and mixed with the other ingredients, it's a good starter-sized salad. The sausage is an interesting choice to mix in, and the salad dressing (a lemon cherry vinaigrette) is AMAZING!

Thanks Fishbulb for the review. The hunk of lettuce really looks bad, agreed.

Two words: iceberg lettuce?!??@!@! What the... ??? That's flat out insulting.

                          yuck.

When I was ... um... younger, I had a friend who's father was the head of a large hospital. He never was in want of money, and I always dreaded the days/nights when he would pick the restaurant. Always a "high end" one. The menu would come and everyone would sit there trying to find something that they could afford, except for this one friend. He'd look at the menu approvingly, nod his head, and say, "... that's not bad!"

Some years later his father passed away, and he got married. Suddenly he was totalling up running tallies in his head, scribbling prices on notes of paper, and chooseing "family" restaurants.

He'd have loved the BB... back then.

                          Iceberg lettuce?!?!?!!!??

I don't know... the whole renovaiton thing seems a bit cheezy to me. Sure it has the best location of any resturant in DL, but... but... it's buy the loading dock of a major ride...... riders floating by wanting buscuits... non-alcholic beverages (I know... it doesn't NEED it) and kids in paper pirate hats. All of this mixed with bank breaking prices (for the average schmoe), crappy looking salads and tiny food portions? It just seems like a... joke. I can see charging big bucks at Club33... membership, people are probably more dressed up, alcho-beverages....

I don't know, from these reviews, it seems like something is off....

                            Hmm... just my thoughts.

Just have to ask, how do they thoroughly wash the lettuce
if its served in it's original form?
