  • Cast Preview of SM In May?

I've heard that the cast preview will be in May? Can anyone confirm this?

  • #2
I havent heard anything...but I do know that the managers and VPs have ridden it...so it is possible.

Um, if people are riding it already and there are possible cast previews in May does that mean they may open it before July? What are the chances for soft public openings in May or June?

Yeah, I've been hearing a lot about Space Mountain being tested and ridden by Imagineers and others lately... However, I doubt they'll open Space Mountain any sooner than the July 15-17 weekend. Theyre probably going to save it (if it is ready already) for the birthday weekend as a big attendance draw.. I'm sure theyll come up with a clever advertising campaign tying together Space and the birthday weekend...

Just because the higher ups have ridden it, doesn't mean they are done with testing yet. They probably have a lot to do to make sure it is completely ready for opening. We already got July instead of November, so I wouldn't be holding my breath for anything too much sooner than that- but I think Cast previews/soft openings would be a possibility at this point.

Doubtful. For cast for one of the volunetEAR programs for raising $50+ for some sort of walk results in the prize of getting a July 14th preview of Space Mountain. So I highly doubt that there will be even CM previews before the 2nd week in July.- Unless you are a CM who is also a water-filled dummy.

On splash mountain they used big heavy water filled wheights as testers in the new logs. I don't think they would use water filled dummies on a indoor rollercoaster though, (What if one sprung a leek? It could damage loads of things!) THey will probably use something else to test it with.

That's aweful and it doesn't surprise me. Wait - I take that back, Six Flags actually tests their rides first? I am surprised.

Well, I read somewhere that they run all the coasters before they open to make sure they run properly and a dog rides some of them to test them. Maybe it wasn't six flags, but its one of those coaster parks.

perhaps, it was a long time ago when I read the article. I just remember the picture of an old man and a golden retreiver in the front seat of a roller coaster car.

                              Poor dog.

You'd think PETA would have a fit about that. Heck, you'd think much more practical and rational animal-protection agencies would have a fit about that.

That's just sad and dangerous for the poor animal.

The use of water dummies for the testing of amusement rides is very common. The uses are not just for water rides (ie. splash mountain) but for other ride types such as rollercoasters and flat rides (for those who don't know a flat ride is a ride that has a fixed, stationary base ie. tea cups, dumbo, most of Flick's Fun Fair, etc.). The advantage to using water dummies is the ability to adjust to different possible ridder body weights by adding or removing the amount of water contained inside the dummy. The most common and least expensive of the water dummy types are the "BARTS (tm) Water Ballast Test Dummy" made by Frost Manufactoring. I personly have seen these dummies in use at the DLR, WDW, Sea World (San Diego and Orlando), Knott's, Bush Gardens Tampa, and Magic Mounatin plus countless times on the net and in video. Here is a pic of some in use for Journey to Atlantis at SWC "Test Boat on Lift With Dummies"
