  • Wheelchair rental for non-disabled purposes?

I know people rent wheelchairs all the time when they really don't need one but I was curious if anyone knew if they rented them out to just about anyone for any reason. Here is why I would like to rent one.

I would like to be able to videotape an entire walkthrough of the park, from entrance gate all the way though all the lands and back down main street. I suppose I could just walk the entire distance and I have no problem doing that. I want my video to be more seamless and I want the shots to be more smooth. If I walked with the camera you will end up with the slight bouncing whenever you walk and videotape at the same time. I want to avoid the bouncing and have a nice, professional video.

Do they ask you why you need a chair or do they just rent them?

I bet they do ask. I mean I can't picture them just giving those away. But I can be wrong.

I think the Americans with Disabilities Act might prevent Disney from asking questions. Mobility impairments are not always clearly evident.

I'm pretty sure you the only requirement for getting one is giving them money.

I remember reading in past MiceAge columns about Disneyland cracking down on people renting wheelchairs/requesting special access passes for people who don't need them.

In certain areas of the park, a wheelchair might be more bumpy than just walking it through.

I've never heard of special access passes; if you want to spend that kind of money, they'll be glad to take it from you.

I also forgot to mention that I would NOT be using the chair for special access to attractions. I don't mind waiting in lines.

They do require reasons for the special assistance pass, since that is what was being severely abused in years past. But, to rent a wheelchair all they ask for is $$$$. You won't be questioned at all if you want to rent one. Just please do it at a time when the park isn't very crowded so that those who legitimately need one won't be left without.

My FIL rented one once and his only problem was the heat was getting to him. No questions were asked of him.

Don't think you're the only one who's thought of using a wheelchair for a camera dolly...

Nope, they don't ask for a thing but some cash for the rental and a $20 bill for a deposit.

And yes, please be courteous to the folks that really need them. They do run out of them.

                        Thanks!

no questions asked. i've seen so many people get wheelchairs who don't need them. many groups get them and then share it amongst themselves so that whoever is tired gets a chance to sit and ride around for awhile. but like many other people have been saying, do it at a slow time of the year so that no one who really needs the wheelchair misses out on being able to get one. this comes from someone who has 2 people in their family that needs those wheelchairs and has been unable to get them in the past (at WDW) and had to wait around for some to come back or for them to track some down.

Its not a "special access pass" and it doesn't take money. Its a pass for someone who has a disability that needs special assistance. It doesn't cost. You have to explain to the City Hall CM the assistance you need and why and they help determine what they can do to meet your needs.

Having ridden in a wheelchair down Main St, your video would probably turn out smoother walking.
