  • Haunted Mansion Layout Details

    I found this very interesting:

    FROM: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haunted_Mansion

Behind the scenesSplash Mountain show buildings are very close to each other. When the Doom Buggies face the back of the graveyard, adjacent to the ghostly band, guests are looking at the building's northwest corner. Just a few yards beyond the back wall is a similar but smaller building housing Splash Mountain. Guests evacuated from Splash Mountain during a breakdown will verify that the Haunted Mansion show building is virtually indistinguishable from the Splash Mountain building, and that the two have only a few yards of pavement between them.
When the Haunted Mansion was transplanted to other Disney parks, space management was much less of a problem. For example, in Orlando's Magic Kingdom, the entire show building is located within the park boundaries. Luckily, the placement of the show building has no bearing on the quality of the experience. Most guests give little thought to whether they are actually inside the mansion they saw while in line.

I would argue with the line "Luckily, the placement of the show building has no bearing on the quality of the experience."

I have always found Disneyland's Pirates and Haunted Mansion rather magical because the size of the show building can not be determined before entry. As a kid, I thought I was underground, which was partially true. The hidden, underground, and exterior show buildings allow the rides facades to be closer together and better integrated with their themed environments. In WDWMK, I rather hated having to walk around large show buildings. All in all, hidden show buildings equals more magic.

I agree with the magic of hidden show buildings. It was only a few months ago that I saw the building for "It's a Small World" in an arial photograph. Until then, I never thought of where I was... I only knew that I was transported to someplace special. Seeing the photos of the huge building have somehow taken away some of the magic. All in all, I think Disneyland has done a great job of hiding things that do not need to be seen.

        I couldn't agree more.
When I was youger, I always wondered exactly where I was when I was on HM and POTC. Once I subscribed to the E-Ticket magazine all of my questions were answered.
But it didn't ruin any magic for me. I've always been curious about how things work. As a matter of fact, I used to think that the best job at Disneyland would be in attraction maintenance. Of course, now that I realize that most of the maintenance people work the 3rd shift, I don't think it would be such a cool shift. I enjoy the daylight too much.

That is a great article!!!! I love the fact that you go underground and out of site. To me that is what makes the rides in NOS so special to me. My two favorite rides are HM and POTC and I am a roller coaster enthusiast. I think that DL is the best theme park because things are out of site, out of mind.

Here is the show building, you can see how it's hidden by trees by looking at the queue area in the top left.

What do you mean.. For HM and Pirates in MK, guests do not walk anywhere near the show buildings.. let alone around them.

HM.. the show building actually goes behind the skyway station and up near small world.. bounded on the other side by the River

Pirates.. again on the edge.. bound by the JC and the guest area limits.

The only show buildings that feel like you walk around them is really fantasyland.. because there isn't much distinqusihing between the different structures in that area.

In Adentureland, the buildings all really back up to the back of frontierland..which you can't tell from street level either.

Tomorrowland feels like big massive structures period.

I haven't been to WDW since '87, but I was a Disneyland annual pass holder at the time and compared the two parks closely. My impression was that I was walking around show buildings, although now, I just pulled it up on local.live.com and you're right. You don't technically walk around a single show building, so much as you walk around them all, or can see where they must be. In Disneyland, you see the train going behind both the Pirates and the Mansion facades. Disneyland also had cars and people movers traveling over a park like area which hid the Submarine show building. Even Disneyland's Fantasyland had Mr. Toad overlapping Alice. For these reasons I would say Disneyland is a lot more deceptive and tricky in hiding show buildings and faking out those people trying to pay attention, but I really do need to get back to WDW.

only when you get in the air do you really see any of it (except for Fantasyland IMO). Sounds like the shear size difference had an impact on you as well. Things certainly aren't as intertwined at MK.. simply because there is a ton more space

Just drag and scroll around the window Use the floating box to change zoom and views.. but just drag to move around. When in the 'birds eye view' you are bound by edges. Click in the thumbnails in the floating window to move between 'areas'. Or just click on aerial, move to where you want.. then click 'birds eye view'

If you live in a built-up area.. you'd be amazed the detail you can see in your house, etc

Did you notice that in the bird's eye view, Space Mountain is all copper in some directions (South at the top shows it all white) and in the aerial view, it is partly white and partly copper?
