  • Tom Sawyers Island /Kid question

Do you think it's OK to let an 8 year old run around TSI alone for about and hour while I do something else, or should he be supervised? I could send him over do what I want for a bit come back and get him later or is he too young to be un attended?

    any info

Ummm... I don't have kids myself, but I would strongly recommend you don't leave an 8 year old *anywhere* alone for an hour, Disneyland or not. Maybe some other parents out there could chime in, but I definitely think it's a bad, bad idea. (of course, I have a feeling that when I *do* finally have kids, I'll have them in bubble wrap suits until they're at least 15)

I would say that depends on the kid. However, when I was 8 years old, I spent at least 2 hours on TSI without any problems.

Those days are gone. I would not feel it was safe to leave your eight year old on Tom Sawyer Island.

This image of your cat, fully dressed, requesting a photo shoot (in an English accent mind you) just really got to me. Wow, I need to go catch my breath and maybe see what was in that bottled water I was drinking earlier...

            Not a good idea.

If he was 10+, then yes. Give him a watch and tell him when and where to meet up at what time

Why i say no? He could fall of of TIS (you never know) You may lose him around the park. Maybe buy him a cell phone in handy. Like the Disney Mobile.

When i was 8, i spent time on TIS with no problem at all, but it depends on the kind of person.

            I say No.

              Uh...Speaking as a parent...NO.

God forbid...You wouldn't want to make the evening news over a tragic event and then have a bunch of MC'ers talk about "that bad parent" here on MC would you?

Don't want to sound morbid, but anytime that you mix an unattended child together with dirt pathways, rocks to climb on, "adventuresome" spots to explore and water, you are just asking for trouble.

              Good luck!

There's a little tiny restroom out there too, and I hate to think of some weirdo hiding out in there. :shudder:

I heard that there is a kid on TSI that's been there since 1979 ... he sleeps in a cave and eats discarded churros--

I just went to TSI on Sunday and I don't recommend you leave your child there. There are way too many places he could possibly injure himself or some insane person could take him without you knowing (because not everyone is in the same area of the island at the same time.) Yes there is security there, but they can't be everywhere at once.

I wouldn't simply because you never know who is there waiting on kids. 8 years old is WAY to young imo to be left unsupervised and unprotected for an hour.

I don't have kids but I wouldn't do let my child go anywhere alone, even Disneyland, if they're under 10-12 years old. I would trust my child, I just wouldn't trust anyone else on that island. There could be people on the island that look for children that are alone.

Re: Tom Sawyers Island /Kid question

I spend the summers working at a day camp and I had the 9-10 year olds this year on our trip to Disneyland and I refused to take them to Tom Sawyer's Island. Most likely, nothing will happen and no harm will come to your child but....you have to be careful! There is just too much potential for danger for an 8 year old to be left alone there.

Last week my friends and I went to DL and went to TSI and there are so many little nooks and crevices to hide in...it would probably be very difficult for you to find him...

                          My best score ever!

Yarrggh, even as a pirate captain I be wary of leavin' my little sailors alone ... Thar be pirates about, and not always the fun-lovin' kind.

Never leave your kid alone anywhere in Disneyland. As much as we like to think it's the happiest place on earth, it's definitely not the safest. Yes, there are scary adults there who will follow a family waiting for one of the kids to get separated from the rest of their group. Creepy men have stalked me in Disneyland since I was a little girl, but luckily, I always had someone with me to spot them and refuse to leave my side. I still don't feel safe there without someone to walk around with. From my experience, the same person can be following you the entire day, waiting for the exact moment they can catch you by yourself. Never give them that opportunity.

I'm glad to see you've decided not to let him go off by himself.

Glad to see that you have chosen the right path.

Sorry to ruin your plans, but really, even DL is no place to leave an 8 year old unattended. And also, DL shouldn't be used (or expected to be) a day care center.

Enjoy your time WITH your son at the Park. The memories you make together just might last a lifetime...

And as far as the chasing around goes...maybe try one of those leashes.

                                    Just kidding!

                                    Enjoy!

The CMs aren't babysitters. They would be well within their right to call the authorities to report an abandonded child if they noticed that the child was unattended for any length of time.
