Ok, can anyone recollect this question. Today when you go to the park you will see janitorial cast members dressed up in their "whites" doing their thing. Now this question specifically about female janitorial cast members. Can anyone remember the color of the costumes female janitorial cast members had to wear back in the late 70's, early 90's?

not for a few years. The females cast members wore a different colored costume than the male cast members.

I was looking through some of my old Disneyland Line newsletters and saw a pic, which gave me the idea to ask this question.

Well I guess no one knows this question, so hereis the answer. The color of costume the female janitorial cast members had to wear was RED with white trim.

Damn, I was so close. I was going with red leather and white frills.

I have so much to learn!

Or at the very least, I need to get out more...

Red janitorial costumes? Weird. I think brown is the most logical since they deal with trash.. I couldn't imagine keeping the white so clean.

Thats the whole point of Disneyland having thier Janitorial uniforms white...because they're soooooo good, they dont ruin thier white uniforms. It makes you say..."Wow they clean up trash, yet thier uniforms stay immaculately white! Very impressive *golf clap*"

White is often used in professions where the uniforms may get dirty because it is easy to bleach out any spots or stains. You can't do that (as easily anyway) with other colors.

Although i agree with your explination, because its practical and more real than mine...i still believe that Disney does it to show off. Functionality with design i suppose. HA!

General custodial and Disneyland custodial lesson and the answer to the question "Why white?":

Col. George Waring Jr., a former Civil War officer, was appointed New York City's first sanitation director in 1896. He created America's first revenue-producing, residential solid waste collection and recycling program. Launching a major public relations campaign and outfitting his sanitation workers in white uniforms to parallel the cleanliness of the medical profession, Waring used his "White Wing" workers to wage a war against waste.
Disneyland had it's own official "White Wings" the most famous of which was a gentleman known by the name of "Trinidad." He was also often called simply, "The White Wing" (no slight whatsoever that he was a black man...simply a reference to the traditional term for these historic white clad sanitation workers).

He was as famous and as well photographed as "Maynard" is today. I have some shots of him with Walt somewhere...but I can't seem to locate them right now. But he was a great guy and was not only a functioning custodial worker, but was almost a "character" of the Park!

In the following photo on top, is a shot of him and his cart near the Hub taken in 1955. Below that is a postcard shot of the Market House with Disneyland Characters "The Sheriff" "Black Bart" "Keystone Cop" and almost looking forced into the photo shoot...the White Wing Trinidad with his cap sitting on the floor beside him. You almost get the feeling he's thinking, "What the heck am I doing in this photo?"

One of those great early Disneyland Cast Members that is all but lost to time. I wonder what ever became of him?

But that's where Disneyland Custodial's "whites" come from...the old traditional "White Wings."
