  • Was there a Tron Themed attraction?

I was in line for Pizza in TL and heard a father telling his teen sons that there was a Tron ride either near or around where Innovations is now. I wanted to say he was wrong but was unsure of myself and didn't want to look like a fool if I was wrong.

I certainly don't remember anything Tron, but I don't remember much of Disneyland before 2000, didn't go much in my teen years.

Was there a Tron themed attraction?

it was part of the peoplemover.

you would travel through (i believe) the innoventions building as if you were on a parasail. or light cycle. either way, you could tell you were in tron. man, i miss the peoplemover.

Since I was really really young, the Tron room scared me for some reason. I still remember it well though.

You know! The people mover thread had me really digging in my memory banks and I started to remember it going through star tours and maybe tron but I was unsure of myself. Ha!

Re: Was there a Tron Themed attraction?

Dang, you beat me to it. Peoplemover became Peoplemover Thru The World of Tron. There were two "superspeed tunnels" that the Peoplemover went "thru" -- you were surrounded by a big white screen that you went through, slowly. My memory is failing me as to what used to be on the screens, I think they showed POV car race footage, various shots that felt like you were going really fast. There were fans which blew air to increase the feeling of speed. When Tron came out, they changed the films in these rooms over to Tron footage. The first room showed the scene where Jeff Bridges had just been sucked into the computer, and was flying through abstract geometric shapes. The second room showed Recognizers flying around, alternating with the Light Cycle game with the other cycles blocking you in with their light walls.

Since arcades are generally considered an "attraction" I should mention that the Starcade had a big bank of Tron games, and a nice display wall to go with them.

They could probably make a really interesting new Tron ride somewhere in Tomorrowland (Maybe where the Rocket Rods were).

I agree with that. A Tron ride would be cool.

Another movie I wouldn't mind getting some attention is The Black Hole. this movie creeped me out when I was a kid. It would be cool if Disney did a remake of this movie as they are remaking a bunch of their old movies. To keep that dark feel to it, get someone like Christopher Nolan to direct. Make it a serious flick by cutting out the cheezy parts (sure, keep the robots but change them so they wouldn't be so geeky. Maximillian was cool but the other two...) Then, make an E-ticket attraction out of it in Tomorrowland.

Re: Was there a Tron Themed attraction?

Kind of a poor man's Soarin' Over California "surround" film featuring scenes from Tron, as you went through the Carousal building on the Peoplemover.

It started out as just "Superspeed Tunnel" which was scenes of POVs from boats and racecars with wind thrown in your face, and then when Tron came out, they added those Tron scenes to Superspeed Tunnel and changed the name to something like "Peoplemover, featuring Tron Superspeed Tunnel."

Many of those that worked at the park at that time called it "Ron Superspeed Tunnel" or "The Ron Tunnel" after then Disney chief honcho and producer of Tron (and Walt's son-in-law), Ron Miller.

                                Some stuff from the internet:

SuperSpeed Tunnel added 1977, Tron feature added 1982 to August 21, 1995
                                And here's SuperSpeed's Attraction Poster:

Though the attraction name when Tron was added seems to have been both, "Peoplemover Thru The World of Tron"....

                                ...and Tron Superspeed Tunnel:

                                SuperSpeed Tunnel
In 1977, the SuperSpeed Tunnel was added to the PeopleMover. It was located in the Carousel Building, then housing America Sings . Race cars were projected on the walls all around the trains. In 1982, the scenes were changed to clips from Tron's light cycle race scene, and the tunnel was renamed Tron SuperSpeed Tunnel.

Yes there was a Tron themed area the PeopleMover/Rocket Rods went through. I loved how they went through Star Tours though.

Man I miss the Tron tunnel. I realize that if the PM came back, Tron probably wouldn't. But the nostalia factor with Tron is probably the highest for me when it comes to Disneyland.

BTW- Does anyone else ever watch Tron just to remember the PM? (crickets chriping) Hmmm....

Aww, thanks! I love em too.

The Tron tunnels are just more proof that the Peoplemover is a MUST for Disneyland. When I went to Florida last month that was the first thing I went on.

I bet the Imagineering people must be scratching their heads, saying, "Why are these people so nostalgic about the dumb old Peoplemover??"
