Since Disneyland's 50th anniversary is going to be a big deal, much of the 50th souvenires will eventually become valued collectibles. Since Disney's producing special podcasts for the 50th event this week (which has never been done before), do you think they'll become collectibles, too? Rare 50th audio? Can you see yourself as a wrinkled grandparent, sharing your golden Mickey ears and 50th podcasts with your grandchildren?

I'm still waiting for the first actual podcast. The site said May 3-5, but nothing has come through yet except for the "you're subscribed!" 30 second file. Has anyone else received a file?------------------

The first podcast is available. Visit Intercot West for the files. They're more up-to-date than the Disneyland site.
The first podcast is about an hour long.Last edited by Trader Sam; 05-04-2005, 06:10 AM.Ask about my popular 2-for-1 sale!

What are podcasts? I'll take that one...
Podcasts themselves are really nothing more than mp3 files. What makes them unique are 2 elements: the content and the mode of delivery.
Content-wise, most podcasts so far have taken the form of an audio blog. And just like standard blogs, podcasts are as interesting or boring as the person who creates them. Think of them as little radio shows.
As for the mode of delivery, most podcasts can be downloaded directly to your computer with a link, just like any other file. But (and here's the big difference), all podcasts are also linked to their own "dynamic rss file". Tech mumbo-jumbo aside, what this means is that if you get a free application like iPodder and then download the rss file for a specific show, you'll then be subscribed to that show. Whenever the show is updated, you don't have to do anything - it'll automatically be downloaded to your computer (and then you can put it on your mobile audio device - hence the "pod" in the name).
As far as the official Disney podcast goes, I was pretty impressed. Michael (the host) has been doing movie review podcasts for the better part of a year - which makes him a podcasting pioneer. His unfettered access to the bigwigs at Disneyland gives him the unique opportunity to bring some cool info to the masses. Since he's not a hardcore Disney fan, he's not going to go much deeper than the official company line, but I'm pretty sure that the official podcasts are aimed at the more casual Disney fan anyway.
I'm going to be doing mini-MousePods overnight tonight and tomorrow (available for download on Thursday and Friday morning), and will do a 50th kickoff retrospective next Wednesday. It should make for a fun companion to the official podcasts.
If you're going to be in the park anytime between now and next Tuesday and you want to be a part of the show, PM me your cell number with a good time to call and I'll make sure you get to share your first-hand views.

I was extremely impressed by the DL podcast. The host definitely knows his stuff at producing a podcast but doesn't know that much about Disneyland. At first I thought this would be a problem (e.g. compare to knowledgable podcast hosts such as MousePod's Jesse) but in retrospect this is a good thing. Disney wants to bring in the "casual" guests so having a "casual" host works.
Definitely worth checking out even if you don't have an iPod.Kevin Crossman

I was wondering the same thing. I download the ipodder from the Disneyland web page but thats about all Ive figured out. I now have a "lemon" on my desktop but when I go to the subscribe thing all I get is a pop up window with a bunch of blah blah blah... Did I do something wrong?

MellyMouse, click the Subscriptions tab and Disneyland Resort will be listed there. Then click on the left-most button "check for new podcasts." Then, on the download tab it will download all the podcasts so far and list them. You can then right click them and choose "play episode in mediaplayer."My finger points.

- Click on the little green plus sign ("Add a new feed")
- paste the following into URL: http://www.pocketsymphony.com/mousepod/mousepod.xml
- Enjoy The MousePod - 11 shows and counting!

I think I get this now, but not quite. Why don't they just link the gosh-darn MP3 and let people do what they want with it? Why all this RSS nonsense? They could just as easily say "bookmark this page and come back every day."
Lastly, the name is kind of misleading, as it sounds like it excludes those of us who don't own iPods or MP3 players at all.
