  • Lincon: The Debate

    From Wikipedia:
    There is also a movie which is shown in the same theater as Mr. Lincoln. It features Steve Martin, who once worked at the Magic Shop on Main Street, and Donald Duck. The movie is a humorous look at how Disneyland has changed through out the years. It is 17 minutes long, so it does not have much time to go into detail, but hits most of the highlights. After viewing the show, there is a timeline on the way out showing major events in Disneyland's history, including the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, which is a reworking of the original Submarine Voyage that opened in 1959 and closed in 1998 as part of the new Tomorrowland. It is scheduled to open in 2007. The exhibit premiered on May 5, 2005 and is scheduled to return to Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln after the end of the 18 month celebration, sometime around Labor Day, 2006.
    This says it all! We still are undecided.

      It was nice but I liked Lincoln a lot more. Lots of people here think they should put something new in but seeing how things are going, they'll probably put in a princess play area in.

          Re: Lincon: The Debate

          Well, the 50th show was appropriate for the celebrations and I'm glad I got to see it while it was one.

          However, for longevity, the audio-animatronic show - especially one with as much significant Disneyland history as 'Great Moments...' - is probably more appropriate in the long-term.

          I'd vote for:
          a) the end of the Steve Martin show and it to see a DVD release with the (eventual?) 'Secrets, Stories...' DVD;
          b) the restoration of the signifcant historical artifact that is 'Great Moments..', with maybe some minor restoration work;
          c) the addition of an 'L' in Lincoln to the title of this thread.

            Wiki has free information. You get what you pay for.

            Have Steve Martin movie, and then GMWML. Dump the old Walt Disney Story for a while. It's not as if The Walt Disney Story is an animatronic of historical wonder, after all. Just a movie, that can be shown or not shown at any given time.

                        Walt loves history.
                        Lincoln will come back.
                        Just remember, the last time Disney tried to down grade the whole lincoln show they go massive mail and complaints. Not sure Disney wants to see that again.

                              Lincoln is good, but the only thing I would want to see it replaced with (as suggested by another poster ) would be...

                                I believe Stephen A. Douglas won the debate...but it was Abraham Lincoln that went on to become our nation's 16th President...and perhaps, its savior.

                                Something I posted on another bulletin board on this exact subject just last month:

                                The idea was quickly shot down because many (including several Disney family members) expressed their opinion that it would look too self-serving to the corporation, rather than any type of subtle or classy tribute to Walt the man. Many still think such a thing would smack of Wally World.

                                One Imagineer once told me that he couldn't put his finger on it, but the idea just sounded creepy. Not right.

                                I heard that Lillian Disney (Walt's wife) even expressed displeasure over the Partners statue, and that she gave a comment something along the lines of, "Walt wouldn't like this one bit. Walt wanted Disneyland to be dedicated to the ideals that created America. Not be some tribute or shrine to him!"

                                But apparently she somewhat grudgingly accepted the idea of the statue...although I also heard she made some comment to Blaine Gibson (the sculptor) along the lines of "Oh great. You did have to pick one of those [expletive] neckties?" She apparently didn't like Walt's collection of Smoke Tree Ranch neckties very much.

                                  Re: Lincon: The Debate

                                  Lincoln had a great run at the Opera House but should he return? I'm not sure. He wasn't exactly playing to packed houses before the 50th.

                                  Why not an all new show that features other great Americans? "Great Moments with Mark Twain" for example. Its time to plus the show and a new AA that paid homage to America's greatest literary wit could be just the thing. By all contemperary accounts, Twain was a brilliant and funny public speaker. Just have Hal Holbrook record the script and let WDI do the rest.

                                  Disneyland should always move forward. If you're going to retire a show, you must replace it with something better.

                                    How about Great Moments with Dr. King? Actual recordings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., could be used (or, if they preferred to go with a living actor, there are plenty who can do a King voice easily). Or, if they wanted to go with another President killed by gunfire, Great Moments with Mr. Kennedy. Have Teddy cut the ribbon for the opening ceremony.

                                        I really don't get what the big deal is with Lincoln. I think a lot of Disneyland fans are a little too into the fact that Disneyland can mean consistency and memories- like being able to go on rides that multiple generations before may have been on with little overall change, and experiences that are totally ingrained in our culture and lore. Lincoln just isn't one of those things IMO, and isn't a very entertaining show for most people. I'd much rather see something new and exciting, or just plain entertaining (and repeatable!).
