Tortilla Joes in DTD failed to pass their health inspection last week. Inspectors found a cockroach infestation in the kitchen! They were later reopened and passed. Maybe they passed for now but I'll pass on eating there altogether.

Re: Tortilla Joes in DTD fails health inspection
I believe they have been off the list with most of the Disney fans I know for a long time now. This news just seals the deal.
How did you find this out? Did you see it on the health department's website?Anything listed on the park maps as an attraction is fair game for inclusion in the Rally.
I cannot confirm nor deny the inclusion of any attraction in the Rally.

Re: Tortilla Joes in DTD fails health inspection
I saw it as a small blurp in the Orange County Register the other day. Almost all restaurants have this in their records though. So not big deal. Still not going to eat there, but more for the bad service and so so food.Mom, remember, it's not what a person is like on the outside that counts,it's what they are like in their HEART!

Re: Tortilla Joes in DTD fails health inspection
Yeah. This doesn't change my opinion of them at all. They are so slow that maybe the cockroaches would help move the plates out of the kitchen a little faster. I ate there once and found them overpriced and slow. So I haven't gone back for those reasons. Something like this they can fix. If they made the food taste better and the service improved I think I might try them again.Check out my new Disney Blog here. What it lacks in quality it makes up with... Well, nothing I guess.

Re: Tortilla Joes in DTD fails health inspection
When I went last year, I didn't think they were bad at all. Although the service was a little lacking in spots, the food was terrific. It's a shame to hear that they need a management refurb. I'm guessing quality is slacking off at the Patina Group?

Re: Tortilla Joes in DTD fails health inspection
I have to say this does in fact heavily disturb me since it had become my new DTD late night dining hot spot. I've been vegetarian for a little over a month now and veggie selections are kind of lacking around the resort. Tortilla Joes seemed to be the only place where I actually had a full menu of delicious food to choose from rather than just 1 or 2 lackluster selections. I do agree that the service has been rather underwhelming, but then again, so is the service at almost every DTD location IMHO, so it didn't concern me as much.
Too bad... maybe off-site is the way to go for me nowadays... Shed bless Mimi's Cafe across the street from the park and down the street from my apartment. It's my favorite all-around casual dining selection hands down. :thumbup:Julie Rei

Re: Tortilla Joes in DTD fails health inspection
I'm not sure what things are like now, with two parks and many more restaurants.
I can just reflect that back in my day of the 70's and 80's, it always seemed that Disney had a pretty cozy relationship with the OCHD. The "surprise" inspection almost always started at the Coffee House or Plaza Inn on Main Street, and someone at that location would call all the other locations to warn us.
I want to stress that at least in New Orleans Main Kitchen, and in all the other places I worked, we ran a very clean operation but still the advance notice helped up to polish up, pick up any dirty towels, whatever.
I'm guessing that the Tortilla place in DTD is run by another company, right?
Do we need grades posted at the entrance of DLR and other Orange County eateries, like they have in L-A?

Re: Tortilla Joes in DTD fails health inspection
Being somewhat involved with Health Dept inspections, you wouldn't want to know what conditions can actually be considered as passing. They have to be REALLY bad to get written up/cited, and over the edge to get shut down.
It's kind of like trying to eat a steak after watching a cow being slaughtered. You know it happens, but you just don't want to experience it. Kind of "kills the appetite" if you know what I mean.
Good luck!

Re: Tortilla Joes in DTD fails health inspection
Food preparation is a dirty business--and has been since the dawn of time. Hair falls into food. Crumbs fall behind cabinets and attract vermin. People don't wear gloves or wash their hands. And even after washing their hands, you may not want to think about what they touch.
For the squeamish among you, you may want to re-consider dining out at all. For the rest of us, we just don't think about the realities--and they are realities, no matter how high the grade in the window--we just try to have a nice meal.
