  • Calling all Imagineers.

Hi, i'm scorchio. Normally i'm not one to start too many threads for my own gain, or to ask for a specific group of people, but I'd like to talk to imagineers of any level.

I am interested in becoming an imagineer as a job, but I don't know much about how to become one. So, I have a few questions, that I'd like to discuss in depth:
    1. Where do I have to start? What qualifications? What level of education?
    2. What are the different types of imagineering?
    3. Are there different ranks of imagineering (junior, senior etc.)?
    4. Would I have to live in certain areas to become an Imagineer (just California, or are there other locations)?
    5. Would I need to contact anyone about imagineering to get a job?
    6. Finally, do you enjoy your job?
    Thank you for your time.

There is a great page someone created regarding how to become a Imagineer, it contains all the answers to your questions!

        Re: Calling all Imagineers.

Don't know if there are any imagineers on here... but there area lot of hopefuls.

And yeah, I was about to post that site when I noticed it was already on here.

WDI holds competitions for internships every year in a limited number of fields. Last year they focused on writing and show production. No word on what this coming years will be. They rotate all the time based on current company needs.

From the reading I've done, they really like people with experience (outside of the intern program). And they prefer you have a fairly diverse background. They like if you are able to link a couple of fields together. Makes you more useful.

As for locations, HQ is in Glendale, CA, but they have field offices tied to each of the parks around the world so you've got some options there.

I recommend hitting up Amazon.com and searching for Imagineering books or Disney books. There are a lot that will NOT talk about how they do things, but that will talk about what they do, and why they do it and give you a pretty good idea of what's involved. They are a very secretive bunch, with reason. I recommend this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/explorer/07...88325-2966565?

        Another good site is: http://homepage.mac.com/wlwesq/Imagineering/

I have read the 13 steps thing....I have concluded that : I still want to be an imagineer, just as long as i have a more solid job elsewhere to compensate

                Re: Calling all Imagineers.

You can be a specialist in a number of different fields to be an imagineer. Most of them, none of us really think about. There's engineering, electrical, lighting, effects, architecture, etc. Then there's the stuff that everyone wants to get in: blue sky, which is thinking up the shows and rides.

You can also be a specialist in storyboards and having a degree in transportation or industrial design from a major art school (calarts, artcenter of pasadena) doesn't hurt. Then there's environmental design which is all the landscaping...

Basically you can do all sorts of things. But if you want a shot of doing any of the designing, better go to Calarts or Artcenter to learn the craft from those who worked in those fields.

Artcenter at Night had a Theme Park design course that was taught by an Imagineer a while back. I'm pretty sure they still offer it for $650. It was a good time.

Thanks for this, I suppose my real desire would be in Blue Sky, but due to living in England and the fact I know NO-ONE in the industry, I think this is one dream too many. (sigh)

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
                    Anything your heart desires
                    Will come to you

If your heart is in your dream
                    No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
                    As dreamers do

                    Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
                    The sweet fulfillment of
                    Their secret longing

Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
                    Your dreams come true

                      Re: Calling all Imagineers.

I am no imagineer, but I dated someone who was one once. He was a mechanical engineer. He talked of developing fabric for Star Tours that would dry quickly when someone wet themselves and also talked about Autopia a bit. Last thing I knew, he was working for a less glamorous faucet company.

You may want to look into, if you are eligible, competing in the ImagiNations competition. You develop something submit it and the finalists present their projects to a panel of Imagineers in Glendale.

I grew up next to Disneyland and always wanted to be an imagineer. I even got and engineering degree and built animatronics for fun. But, alas, I got a really fun, high paying job very quickly and never even checked it out.
