  • A question about POTC...

I have a quick question about Pirates...I have heard before that the skull on the headboard of the captain's quarters is actually a real skull. It is supposedly the skull of an imagineer who requested it before his passing (sounds a little off). That is why it looks different than the rest of the skulls (I suppose). Any truth to this or is it just an urban legend?

That has to be urban legend.

I can't imagine Disney would take the chace of that info getting out.

I do believe that would be a question for Mr Koenig.

I wish I could recall where I heard/read that. I think I read it somewhere a long, long time ago, but I read too many things on Disneyland...it all gets blurred together!

I dont know about it being the skull of an imagineer, but i have heard of the skull being authentic. Kind of creepy, but it gets to watch over the captain's quarters.

I haven't heard the imagineer part of the legend, but I'm pretty sure that the skull is an authentic human skull!

Maybe it was an imagineers idea and it got jumbled when it was retold as time went on. Either way, I find myself always looking at it when I ride POTC and wondering if it's real.

All of the skeletons in PotC were real, initially. In the '60s, it was much cheaper to buy medical cadavers than to synthesize complete skeletons. They were eventually replaced, except for the skull and crossbones over the captain's bed, which are actual human remains.

The bit about it being a late Imagineer is pure myth, though. Hadn't heard that one before.

Wow thanks for sharing that! Next time I go on POTC I am going to be in awe of that skull now.

That's why it's called an "urban legend". A friend of a friend said that it was true, that mean's that it must be true!

People believe so many things that are not true. Check out www.snopes.com for the truth.

That's exactly what I did when I read this thread! Nothing about POTC on there except for an article about Club 33.

The "real skull" item comes up on lots of web sites about Disneyland secrets, but I don't know if it has been (or even can be) confirmed by anyone official.

I was told about the real skull by the manager who conducted our walkthrough of the attraction shortly before the refurb.

I was told about the real skull by an imagineer at an event I attended (sorry, can't remember the name or which event -- I have a wife to remember these things for me, but she's not here at the moment). He said that the headboard was actually purchased as-is, real bones included.

I read somewhere that it WAS real but they changed it when they found out how to make fake skeletons look real. Or something like that.

See my previous post. ALL the skeletons in the entire ride were real at first. When creating complete fake skeletons became economically feasible, the cadavers were replaced. The only one they left alone was the skull and crossbones (yes, the bones below the skull are also real) over the captain's bed.

Thanks for answering. Now that you mention it I remember reading that all the skulls were real at once, but switched out (I think the reason I read was there were complaints). Anyway, thanks for answering, now I can finally stop wondering when I ride POTC all the time!

                                      This doesn't creep anyone out?

WHOSE bones are those? Someone they just found on the side of the road? A John Doe? When the morgue was done with them, they just shipped what was left of him off to DISNEYLAND??

                                      No DNA testing back then.

Hmmm....I wonder if they could determine that now. He could be my uncle Ernie.
